Researcher

J. K. Aggarwal

Also known as Jake K. Aggarwal

Jake Aggarwal is a computer-vision researcher whose work connects motion in image sequences with object recognition, robot vision and human activity. He earned degrees in Bombay, Liverpool and Illinois, then spent 1964–2014 on the University of Texas at Austin's engineering faculty. His papers studied motion and scene structure, and his later surveillance work aimed to detect suspicious activity in video. He chaired the IEEE Computer Society's pattern-analysis committee and served as IAPR president. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1996 and awarded him its 2004 King-Sun Fu Prize; as of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin.

Timeline

  1. 1957–1964

    Degrees across three countries

He earned a B.Sc. from the University of Bombay in 1957, a B.Eng. from the University of Liverpool in 1960, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois in 1961 and 1964.

  2. 1964–2014

    Five decades at Texas

He joined the University of Texas at Austin's College of Engineering in 1964 and served on its faculty through 2014, progressing from assistant professor to associate professor and professor of electrical and computer engineering.

  3. 1975–1982

    Tracing motion through images

With J. A. Webb, he published the 1982 Artificial Intelligence paper “Structure from Motion of Rigid and Jointed Objects,” alongside earlier papers on moving polygonal images and object movement in image sequences.

  4. 1987–1994

    Leading pattern recognition

He chaired the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence from 1987 to 1989 and served as president of the International Association for Pattern Recognition from 1992 to 1994.

  5. 1998

    An IAPR fellowship

The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1996.

  6. 2004

    A prize for motion research

The IAPR awarded him its King-Sun Fu Prize for work on structure and motion from image sequences and their applications to robot vision and human motion.

  7. March 2009

    Recognizing activity in video

His smart-surveillance research aimed to identify suspicious activity and alert people. It developed from tracking 3D object movement in 2D images toward recognizing aggression among multiple people and examining suspicious driving and human-vehicle interactions.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor emeritus

He is Professor Emeritus in Texas ECE, with research interests in computer vision, image processing and pattern recognition.
