Ann Nicholson

Also known as Ann E. Nicholson

Ann Nicholson is an AI researcher whose work uses Bayesian networks to support reasoning under uncertainty and decision support. She studied computer science at the University of Melbourne, received a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford in 1988, completed an Engineering Science doctorate there in 1993, and joined Monash in 1994. She co-founded Bayesian Intelligence and co-authored Bayesian Artificial Intelligence. Her Monash career included senior faculty roles through 2025, and she co-authored the 2020 BARD paper on group Bayesian reasoning. ATSE elected her a Fellow in 2022; as of October 2026, she is a Professor at Monash.

Timeline

  1. 1987–1993

    A Rhodes path to Oxford

She earns computer-science degrees at the University of Melbourne, receives a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford in 1988, and completes an Engineering Science doctorate there in 1993.

  2. 1994

    Joining Monash

After two years as a postdoctoral researcher at Brown University, she joins Monash as a computer-science lecturer in 1994.

  3. 2007

    Co-founding Bayesian Intelligence

She co-founds the consulting company Bayesian Intelligence with Kevin Korb in 2007.

  4. 2010

    Bayesian Artificial Intelligence

She and Kevin Korb co-author the textbook Bayesian Artificial Intelligence in 2010.

  5. 2014–2025

    Leading Monash IT

She serves as Associate Dean (Education) from 2014 to 2016 and Deputy Dean (Research) from 2018 to 2020, and holds the Dean role from 2020 to 2025.

  6. 2020

    BARD for collaborative reasoning

In 2020, she co-authors a paper describing BARD, an online method and expert system for group construction of Bayesian networks. An experiment reports that BARD teams outperform individual users on the tested problems.

  7. 2022

    Fellow of ATSE

ATSE elects her a Fellow in 2022. Her models and tools support decision-making in applications such as fog forecasting, clinical diagnosis, and bushfire risk assessment.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Monash

She is a Professor in Monash University's Faculty of Information Technology. Her research interests include Bayesian networks and reasoning under uncertainty.
