Pascal R. Van Hentenryck
Pascal R. Van Hentenryck researches AI and optimization for engineering. He earned a Namur computer science doctorate in 1987, followed by a long research career at Brown, NICTA, Michigan and Georgia Tech. His early systems include the CHIP constraint programming language and the OPL modeling language. His later work connects learning and optimization with energy, transport, supply chains and healthcare. He became AI4OPT director in 2021 and Tech-AI leader in 2024.

Timeline
-
1985–1987
Study computer science and constraints
He earned a joint computer science degree in 1985 and a Namur doctorate in 1987. He designed and implemented CHIP and OPL, optimization systems that connect programming languages with constraint-based problem solving.
-
1990–2012
A research career at Brown
He held Brown computer science appointments during 1990–2012, including assistant, associate and full professorships. This period forms part of a career focused on optimization and computational methods for describing and solving complex problems.
-
2012–2018
Optimization across new research settings
He led optimization research at NICTA during 2012–2015 and held a Michigan professorship during 2015–2018. He became a Georgia Tech chair in 2018. His research connects optimization with engineering systems and practical decisions.
-
2021–2024
Learning and optimization for engineering
He became AI4OPT director in 2021 and Tech-AI leader in 2024. He applies his research to energy, supply chains, manufacturing, transportation and healthcare.
