Eugene Charniak
Eugene Charniak researched natural-language processing and statistical parsing. He joined Brown in 1978 and later described a shift toward probabilistic language methods around 1990. He coauthored Taggers for Parsers and published a 2000 parsing paper. He received ACL’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and published Introduction to Deep Learning in 2018. Brown documented his retirement in 2022 and his death on 13 June 2023. His work connects language structure with learning from text.

Brown and a change in approach
Charniak joined Brown in 1978. Around 1990, he shifted his research toward probability and learning from text.

1996–2000
Statistical language analysis
Charniak and Michael Littman coauthored Taggers for Parsers in 1996. Charniak published his 2000 Maximum-Entropy-Inspired Parser paper. Together, the papers address concrete work on parts of speech and sentence structure within his statistical-language research.

2011–2018
Recognition and deep-learning teaching
Charniak received ACL’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. His later work covers continuous language representations and the publication of Introduction to Deep Learning in 2018. The book was part of a later research and teaching phase.

Retirement and memorial
By February 2022, Charniak had retired after more than forty years at the university. He died on 13 June 2023 and served as department chair from 1991 to 1997.
