Joost-Pieter Katoen
Joost-Pieter Katoen is a computer scientist who works on formal verification, model checking and probabilistic programming. He studied at the University of Twente, held research posts in Eindhoven and Erlangen, and joined RWTH Aachen's Software Modeling and Verification Group in 2004. His work includes the ETMCC and MRMC model checkers, the 2008 book Principles of Model Checking and the ERC-funded FRAPPANT project on probabilistic programs. He joined the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2024 and received the KHMW Langerhuizen Oeuvreprijs in 2026. As of October 2026, he is a professor of computer science at RWTH Aachen and a part-time professor of Formal Methods and Tools at the University of Twente.

1987–1996
Degrees in computer science
He earns an MSc in computer science at the University of Twente in 1987 and a PhD there in 1996.
-
1990–2004
Research posts across Europe
At Philips Research Labs in Eindhoven, he works as a research scientist from 1990 to 1992 and as a research associate at the University of Twente from 1992 to 1996. At Erlangen-Nuremberg, he is a postdoctoral researcher from 1997 to 1999 and an associate professor at Twente from 1999 to 2004.
