Catholijn Jonker

Also known as Catholijn M. Jonker

Catholijn Jonker is a computer scientist whose AI research centers on negotiation support. She is a full professor of Interactive Intelligence at TU Delft. She earned her PhD at Utrecht University in 1994 and held posts in Amsterdam and Nijmegen before joining Delft in 2006. A VICI grant at the end of 2007 funded the Pocket Negotiator, and her VICI work also yielded the GENIUS platform and the Automated Negotiating Agents Competition. She received the 2024 ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award and was appointed Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands in 2022.

  1. 1990–1994

    Computer science at Utrecht

    She graduates in computer science at Utrecht University in 1990 and earns her PhD there in 1994.

  2. 1994–2006

    Posts in Amsterdam, Nijmegen and Delft

    She works at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam until 2004, when she becomes a professor at Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2006 she moves to Delft University of Technology as professor and section leader of Interactive Intelligence.

  3. 2007

    A VICI grant for negotiation

    She wins a VICI grant at the end of 2007 for the Pocket Negotiator, a project that develops decision support systems for negotiation. Two tangible results of her VICI work are the GENIUS platform and the Automated Negotiating Agents Competition.

  4. 2013–2016

    Academia Europaea and EurAI

    She is elected to Academia Europaea in 2013 and becomes a Fellow of EurAI in 2015. From September 2013 to January 2016 she presides over the National Network Female Professors in the Netherlands.

  5. 2017

    A second chair at Leiden

    In 2017 she adds a professorship at Leiden University, and she divides her time 80-20 between Delft and Leiden.

  6. 2022

    Royal distinction as Knight

    In 2022 she receives a Royal Distinction, and she is appointed Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands.

  7. 2024

    An autonomous agents research award

    In 2024 she becomes the recipient of the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award.

  8. As of October 2026

    Full professor at TU Delft

    She is a full professor of Interactive Intelligence at TU Delft. She also holds professorships at Leiden University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
