Lorenza Saitta

Lorenza Saitta is a computer scientist whose AI research links machine learning, relational learning and abstraction. After earning a laurea, she moved from experimental physics into computer science in 1974. Her career took her through academic posts in Turin and Trento; she helped start the computer-science degree at the Turin faculty that became part of UPO and co-authored books on machine learning and abstraction. In 2002 she became a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, and in 2004 she chaired ECAI's program; she is now a professor emerita at UPO.

  1. By 1974

    Experimental physics at Turin

    Before her 1974 move into computer science, she earns a laurea and works as a researcher in experimental physics at the Polytechnic University of Turin.

  2. 1974

    Moving into computer science

    At Corrado Böhm's invitation, she switches to computer science and becomes a lecturer at the University of Turin in 1974.

  3. 1990–1991

    Posts in Trento and Turin

    She takes a full professorship in sociology at the University of Trento in 1990, then returns to the University of Turin's Alessandria campus in 1991. With Francesco Bergadano and Attilio Giordana, she publishes Machine Learning: An Integrated Framework and Its Applications in 1991.

  4. 1998

    Starting computer science at Turin

    She joins the first faculty group that starts a computer-science degree at Turin's second Faculty of Science. The faculty campus becomes part of the University of Eastern Piedmont in 1998.

  5. 2002

    A European AI fellowship

    She is elected an ECCAI Fellow in 2002 and remains a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence.

  6. 2004

    Program chair for ECAI

    In 2004, she chairs the program for ECAI, the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

  7. 2011–2015

    An abstraction book and emerita post

    With Jean-Daniel Zucker, she publishes Abstraction in Artificial Intelligence and Complex Systems in 2013; the book reviews ideas of abstraction and presents a formal model. In 2015, she becomes Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Eastern Piedmont.
