Xindong Wu

Also known as Wu Xindong, X. Wu, Xin-Dong WU, 吴信东

Xindong Wu is a computer scientist whose research spans data mining, big data analytics, knowledge engineering and Web systems. He earned computer-science degrees at Hefei University of Technology in 1984 and 1987, then completed a PhD in artificial intelligence at Edinburgh in 1993. He helped build the data-mining community through PAKDD, KAIS and IEEE ICDM, coauthored work on ten algorithms, and received IEEE honors in 2010, 2012 and 2022. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Hefei University of Technology and directs its Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Knowledge Engineering with Big Data.

  1. 1984–1993

    Degrees in computer science and AI

    He earns a bachelor's degree in computer science at Hefei University of Technology in 1984 and a master's there in 1987. He completes a PhD in artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh in 1993.

    Building data-mining institutions

    He serves as founding chair of PAKDD's steering committee from 1998 to 2001. He starts the KAIS journal in 1999 and founds IEEE ICDM in 2001.

    Data-mining service awards

    At the University of Vermont, he is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department when SIGKDD gives him its Service Award in 2004. IEEE ICDM gives him its Outstanding Service Award in 2006.

  4. 2007–2008

    Ten algorithms in data mining

    In 2007, he presents ten algorithms identified by IEEE ICDM in 2006 at a seminar at HKUST, describing their impact and current research. He coauthors 'Top 10 algorithms in data mining,' an article in Knowledge and Information Systems in 2008.

  5. 2010–2012

    IEEE fellowship and achievement award

    In December 2010, IEEE names him a Fellow for his contributions to data mining and applications. In 2012, he receives the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award for contributions to data mining and applications.

    Director of computing and informatics

    In August 2016, he assumes duties as Director and Alfred and Helen Lamson Endowed Professor of the School of Computing and Informatics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His research covers data mining, Big Data analytics, knowledge engineering and Web systems.

    IEEE ICDM research contributions award

    In 2022, he receives the IEEE ICDM Research Contributions Award while affiliated with Hefei University of Technology.
