Jing Qin
Also known as Harry Qin, Qin Jing
Jing Qin, also known as Harry Qin, is a professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University who applies deep learning and virtual reality to medical images and healthcare. He earned a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009, then coauthored 3D convolutional networks for medical scans, among them a 2016 cerebral microbleed detector and the 3D deeply supervised network that won the Medical Image Analysis best paper award at MICCAI 2017. After serving as a local organization chair for MICCAI 2019, he was promoted to Professor in PolyU's School of Nursing in July 2023, and Clarivate named him a Highly Cited Researcher in 2025. He is Professor and Director of the Centre for Smart Health at PolyU, where his research covers advanced machine learning and simulation techniques for healthcare and medicine.
Timeline
-
2009
PhD at CUHK
He earns a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009. His doctoral study on VR-based simulation systems for surgical training and planning wins the Hong Kong Medical and Health Device Industries Association Student Research Award.
-
2016
3D CNNs for microbleed detection
In 2016, he coauthors an IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging paper that uses a cascaded 3D convolutional neural network to detect cerebral microbleeds in MR scans; it reaches 93.16% sensitivity with 2.74 false positives per subject on 320 volumetric scans. A paper on 3D fully convolutional networks for intervertebral disc localization and segmentation wins the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality in 2016.
-
2017
A MICCAI best paper award
In September 2017, he wins the Medical Image Analysis best paper award at MICCAI with Pheng Ann Heng, Qi Dou, Lequan Yu, Hao Chen, Yueming Jin and Xin Yang for "3D deeply supervised network for automated segmentation of volumetric medical images". The 3D DSN is a fully convolutional network with a 3D deep supervision mechanism, validated on liver segmentation from CT scans and whole heart and great vessel segmentation from MR images. His ultrasound visualization project also takes the champion award at the 3rd Hong Kong Innovation Day in November 2017.
-
2019
Local chair of MICCAI 2019
In 2019, he serves as a local organization chair for the MICCAI conference. He is also a program committee member for AAAI, IJCAI and MICCAI.
-
December 2022
Associate professor at PolyU
In December 2022, as an associate professor in the Centre for Smart Health at PolyU's School of Nursing, he gives a CUHK seminar on enhancing the representation capability of deep learning models for medical image analysis under limited training data. His research combines virtual and augmented reality with AI for healthcare and medicine.
-
July 2023
Promotion to professor
In July 2023, he is promoted to Professor at PolyU's School of Nursing.
-
2025
A Highly Cited Researcher
Clarivate recognises him as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2025, one of 20 PolyU scholars on the list. In the 2025 Faculty Awards/Prizes for Outstanding Achievement, he receives a Faculty Award in Research & Scholarly Activities.
-
As of October 2026
Director of Centre for Smart Health
He is Professor in the School of Nursing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Director of its Centre for Smart Health, with research interests in advanced machine learning and simulation techniques for healthcare and medicine. In 2026, a paper he coauthors on adapting a vision-language foundation model to medical ultrasound image analysis appears in Expert Systems with Applications.
