Wolfgang Ketter
Also known as Wolf Ketter
Wolfgang Ketter is an information systems researcher who applies AI and simulation to energy markets and electric mobility. He studied communications engineering, business administration, economics, and software development in Trier and Minnesota, then earned a computer science and information systems PhD in 2007. At Rotterdam School of Management, he became a full professor in July 2013 and co-founded Power TAC, an annual trading-agent competition that simulates retail electricity markets. His research received awards in 2020 and 2021, and his team used AI-supported simulations to plan Rotterdam's electric-bus schedules. He coauthored a 2025 real-time decision-support study for electric-bus networks and is a full-time Chaired Professor of Information Systems at the University of Cologne and a part-time Professor of Next Generation Information Systems at Rotterdam School of Management.

Studies and a computer science PhD
In Trier and Minnesota, he studies communications engineering, business administration, economics, and software development. He earns a PhD in Computer Science and Information Systems at Minnesota in 2007.
-
2007–2013
Professorships at RSM
He joins Rotterdam School of Management as an Assistant Professor in 2007, becomes an Associate Professor in 2011, and becomes a Full Professor in July 2013.
-
2012
The first Power TAC competition
He is a co-founder of Power TAC, an annual trading-agent competition that simulates retail electricity markets. Its first competition is held in 2012.
-
2017
A Berkeley research stay
Through summer 2017, he continues a research stay at the University of California, Berkeley.
-
2020–2021
Three research awards
In 2020, his research earns the INFORMS ISR Best Paper of the Year award, and his team receives the inaugural AIS Impact Award for “Artificial Intelligence in the Floriculture Chain.” In December 2021, he shares the INFORMS ISS Design Science Research Award with Eric van Heck and Alok Gupta for Next-ACT, a high-speed auction-market project.
-
2021
AI for electric-bus schedules
In 2021, he advises Rotterdam's transit operator on electric-bus scheduling. His team uses AI-supported simulations and learning loops to find strategies that keep buses on schedule while minimizing charging costs and grid load.
-
2025
Decision support for electric buses
In 2025, he coauthors “A Real-time Decision Support System to Improve Operations in Electric Bus Networks.”
-
Since 2017
Cologne and Rotterdam professorships
In February 2017, he becomes Professor of Business Information Systems and director of the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) at the University of Cologne. He is a full-time Chaired Professor of Information Systems in Cologne and a part-time Professor of Next Generation Information Systems at Rotterdam School of Management.
