Stefan Klein

Stefan Klein is a professor of Applied Medical Image Analysis at Erasmus MC, where his work applies AI to medical imaging. He earned an MSc in mechanical engineering at the University of Twente in 2002 and a PhD on medical image registration at UMC Utrecht in 2008. He received an NWO Physical Sciences VENI fellowship in 2010 and co-developed Elastix, an open-source image registration toolbox. He co-authored the 2023 FUTURE-AI guideline for trustworthy healthcare AI and a 2025 AutoML framework for cancer image classification. By July 2025, he had been appointed full professor and General Chair of the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam; in May 2026, he publicly accepted his professorial appointment.

  1. 2002

    Mechanical engineering at Twente

    He earns an MSc in mechanical engineering from the University of Twente in 2002.

  2. 2008

    PhD in image registration

    At the Image Sciences Institute at UMC Utrecht, he completes a PhD in 2008 on optimisation methods for medical image registration.

  3. 2010

    Elastix and a VENI fellowship

    Klein co-develops Elastix, an open-source toolbox for medical image registration; its IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging paper appears in 2010. He receives an NWO Physical Sciences VENI fellowship in 2010.

  4. 2023

    The FUTURE-AI framework

    In 2023, Klein coauthors FUTURE-AI, a consensus framework for trustworthy and deployable healthcare AI built around six principles.

  5. July 2025

    AutoML for cancer imaging

    In July 2025, Klein coauthors an AutoML framework for cancer image classification using Differential Evolution and Hyperband.

  6. By July 2025

    Full professor and BIGR chair

    By July 2025, Klein is appointed full professor in Applied Medical Image Analysis at Erasmus MC and serves as General Chair of BIGR.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor of Applied Medical Image Analysis

    In May 2026, Klein publicly accepts his appointment as Professor of Applied Medical Image Analysis at Erasmus MC. He is a professor there as of October 2026 and presents examples of his AI research in medical image analysis in his inaugural lecture.
