Researcher

David Gross

Also known as David Groß

David Gross is a full professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Cologne, and ELLIS lists his work under quantum and physics-based machine learning. He is a Fellow in ELLIS Unit NRW, which was established in April 2026. He studied physics at the Technical University Berlin and the University of Potsdam, then completed a physics PhD at Imperial College London under J. Eisert. In 2012 he co-authored a paper on quantum tomography via compressed sensing with three colleagues.

Timeline

  1. 2000–2005

    Studying physics in Berlin

He studies physics at the Technical University Berlin and the University of Potsdam from 2000 to 2005. His thesis, on finite phase-space methods in quantum information theory, has J. Eisert as advisor.

  2. 2005–2008

    A PhD at Imperial College

He completes a physics PhD at Imperial College London between 2005 and 2008, with a thesis on the computational power of quantum many-body states, advised by J. Eisert.

  3. 2008–2010

A postdoc in Braunschweig and Hannover

From 2008 to 2010 he is a postdoc in the group of R. Werner, based at Technical University Braunschweig and Leibniz University Hannover.

  4. 2010–2011

    A postdoc in Zürich

From 2010 to 2011 he is a postdoc in the group of M. Christandl at ETH Zürich.

  5. 2011–2015

    An assistant professorship in Freiburg

From 2011 to 2015 he is a tenure-track assistant professor at the Institute for Physics of Albert-Ludwig University Freiburg.

  6. 2012

    Error bounds for compressed-sensing tomography

In 2012 he co-authors Quantum Tomography via Compressed Sensing: Error Bounds, Sample Complexity, and Efficient Estimators with three colleagues, published in New Journal of Physics.

  7. Since 2015

    A full professorship in Cologne

In 2015 he becomes a full professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Cologne.

  8. As of October 2026

A Fellow in ELLIS Unit NRW

ELLIS lists him as a Fellow at the University of Cologne in ELLIS Unit NRW, under the topic quantum and physics-based machine learning. ELLIS establishes the unit in April 2026.
