Wenyin Liu

Also known as 刘文印, Liu Wenyin

Wenyin Liu is a computer scientist at Guangdong University of Technology whose work in pattern recognition covers graphics recognition, document analysis and the detection of phishing websites. He studied at Tsinghua University, completed a doctorate at the Technion in 1998, and joined Microsoft Research China in 1999 before teaching at City University of Hong Kong from 2002 to 2012. The International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) gave him its ICDAR Young Scientist Award in 2003 and elected him a Fellow in 2010, and he chaired its Technical Committee 10 on Graphics Recognition from 2006 to 2010. Since 2016, he is a professor in the School of Computer Science at Guangdong University of Technology, where his October 2026 arXiv paper TRIZ^a combines TRIZ inventive theory with LLM-driven agent evolutionary search for R&D automation.

  1. 1983–1998

    Tsinghua and Technion degrees

    He earns a B.Eng in 1988 and an M.Eng in computer applications in 1992 at Tsinghua University's Department of Computer Science and Technology, the latter under Prof. Jia Peifa, and teaches there as a lecturer until 1995. In 1998 he completes a D.Sc. in information management engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, advised by Dov Dori, and graduates with honors.

  2. 1999–2012

    Microsoft Research and CityU posts

    In January 1999 he joins Microsoft Research China as a researcher. From 2002 to 2012 he is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at City University of Hong Kong, and from 2003 to 2007 he is also founding CEO of Zhuhai Faster Software Technology, a spinoff of the university's Zhuhai R&D Center.

  3. 2003

    An ICDAR young scientist award

    At ICDAR 2003 in Edinburgh, Scotland, he receives the ICDAR Young Scientist Award from the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

  4. 2006

    A visual anti-phishing strategy

    In 2006 he co-authors "An Antiphishing Strategy Based on Visual Similarity Assessment" with Xiaotie Deng, Guanglin Huang and Anthony Y. Fu in IEEE Internet Computing, volume 10, issue 2.

  5. 2006–2010

    IAPR graphics recognition chair

    From 2006 to 2010 he chairs Technical Committee 10 on Graphics Recognition of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. In 2009 he is program co-chair of the 8th IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC 2009) in La Rochelle, France, and co-edits its selected papers with Jean-Marc Ogier and Josep Lladós, published by Springer in 2010.

  6. 2010

    Elected an IAPR Fellow

    In 2010 the International Association for Pattern Recognition elects him a Fellow for contributions to graphics recognition, performance evaluation, document analysis, approaches to anti-phishing, and services to IAPR.

  7. Since 2016

    Professor at Guangdong University of Technology

    He joins the School of Computer Science at Guangdong University of Technology as a professor in February 2016 and leads a Guangdong Province Innovative Research Team. His research covers blockchain, web identity security, detection of phishing websites, robot vision and graphics and image recognition.

  8. October 2026

    A TRIZ and LLM agent paper

    In October 2026 he posts the arXiv paper "TRIZ^a: Guiding Agent Evolution from Pattern Recognition to Solution Invention", with Guangdong University of Technology as his affiliation. It combines TRIZ inventive theory with LLM-driven agent evolutionary search to automate R&D and tests the approach in cybersecurity.
