Horace S. Ip

Also known as Horace H. S. Ip, Horace Ip, Ho Shing Horace Ip, 葉豪盛

Horace Ip is a computer scientist whose work spans pattern recognition, motion capture, and interactive media. He earned degrees at University College London in 1980 and 1983, then led CityU's computer science department and served in university leadership roles. His research includes deformable-model image segmentation and Body Brush, a motion-capture system that turns body movement into virtual 3D art. IAPR elected him a Fellow in 2004, and he coauthored a 2025 paper on multimodal continual instruction tuning. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor in CityUHK's Department of Computer Science.

  1. 1980–1983

    Degrees at University College London

    He earns a BSc (Hons) at University College London in 1980 and a PhD there in 1983.

  2. 1997–2003

    Head of Computer Science

    He heads CityU's Department of Computer Science from 1997 to 2003. In 2002, he presents CityU's Body-Brush with Alex Tang and Young Hay at ISEA; its motion-capture system turns body movement into a dynamic brush for virtual 3D art.

  3. 2004

    An IAPR Fellowship

    In 2004, IAPR elects him a Fellow for contributions to deformable models for image segmentation and pattern recognition, and for service to the association.

  4. 2006

    Smart Ambience Therapy

    As AIMtech director, he welcomes visitors in 2006 to demonstrations of Smart Ambience Therapy at CityU's Interactive Multimedia and Virtual Reality Laboratory.

  5. 2008–2013

    Interim academic leadership

    He serves as interim dean of CityU's School of Creative Media in 2008–2009 and interim vice-president for Research & Technology in 2009–2011 and 2012–2013.

  6. 2013–2020

    Vice-President for Student Affairs

    He serves as CityU's Vice-President (Student Affairs) from 2013 to 2020 and is the founding director of AIMtech Centre.

  7. 2025

    Multimodal continual instruction tuning

    In July 2025, he coauthors SEFE, a paper on multimodal continual instruction tuning, at the 42nd International Conference on Machine Learning.

    Emeritus professor at CityUHK

    As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor in CityUHK's Department of Computer Science.
