Werner Horn

Werner Horn is a Vienna-based researcher who has worked on medical expert systems and chaired the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ECCAI). In 1981, he coauthored an IJCAI paper on an expert system for primary medical care and served as president of the Austrian Society for Artificial Intelligence. He co-edited the proceedings of ECAI 92 in Vienna, then coauthored papers on the newborn-care systems VIE-VENT in 1993 and VIE-PNN in 2002. In 2000, he was Programme Chair of ECAI 2000 and an ECCAI Fellow, and he was ECCAI Chair in 2006 until Gerhard Brewka succeeded him as president in 2008. He is an Ao.Univ.-Prof. at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of the Medical University of Vienna.

  1. 1981

    Primary-care expert system paper

    In 1981, he coauthors "Knowledge Structure Definition for an Expert System in Primary Medical Care" with Walter Buchstaller and Robert Trappl for the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI).

  2. 1981–1982

    President of the Austrian AI society

    He is president of the Austrian Society for Artificial Intelligence (ÖGAI/ASAI) from 1981 to 1982.

  3. 1992

    Co-editing the ECAI 92 proceedings

    With Bernd Neumann, he co-edits the proceedings of ECAI 92, the 10th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held in Vienna in August 1992.

  4. 1993–2002

    VIE-VENT and VIE-PNN for newborns

    In 1993, he coauthors the AIME-93 paper "VIE-VENT: Knowledge-Based Monitoring and Therapy Planning of the Artificial Ventilation of Newborn Infants" with Silvia Miksch, Christian Popow and F. Paky. In 2002, he is first author of "Development and Evaluation of VIE-PNN, a Knowledge-Based System for Calculating the Parenteral Nutrition of Newborn Infants" in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, with Popow, Miksch, L. Kirchner and Andreas Seyfang.

  5. 2000

    Programme Chair of ECAI 2000

    He is Programme Chair of ECAI 2000, the 14th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held at Humboldt University in Berlin in August 2000. He works from the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Vienna.

  6. 2000

    An ECCAI Fellowship

    He is one of four ECCAI Fellows named in 2000, with Ramon Lopez de Mantaras, Jörg Siekmann and Pietro Torasso. He is listed among the current EurAI Fellows.

  7. 2006–2008

    Chair of ECCAI

    In 2006, he is Chair on the new ECCAI board and signs the September 2006 ECCAI bulletin as ECCAI Chair. In 2008, Gerhard Brewka is elected ECCAI president at ECAI in Patras and credits his predecessor, Horn, with leaving ECCAI in excellent shape.
