Researcher

Michael J. B. Duff

Michael Duff trained as a physicist at University College London and then built image-processing computers for automated visual data processing. He developed UCPR1 in 1967, and grants in 1976 and 1978 supported multiprocessor CLIP systems. Between 1984 and 1992 he served the International Association for Pattern Recognition as secretary and then as president. The IAPR made him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to architectures for parallel processing. He died in 2021, and the IAPR lists him among its 2026 Distinguished Service Award winners.

Timeline

  1. 1953–1956

    A cloud chamber at UCL

As a research student in the UCL physics department from 1953 to 1956, he works on designing a fast recycling high-pressure cloud chamber.

  2. 1967

    The UCPR1 image computer

In 1967 he develops UCPR1, an image-processing computer designed for automated visual data processing.

  3. 1976–1978

    Multiprocessor CLIP vision systems

Grants in 1976 and 1978 support the development of multiprocessor vision systems known as the CLIP.

  4. 1984–1992

    President of the IAPR

He serves as secretary of the International Association for Pattern Recognition from 1984 to 1990 and as its president from 1990 to 1992.

  5. 1985

    A Technical Award for CLIP

He becomes Professor of Applied Physics in 1985. The CLIP programme is given the British Computer Society Technical Award for 1985.

  6. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

The IAPR names him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to architectures for parallel processing and outstanding leadership in the IAPR.

  7. 2000

    First BMVA Distinguished Fellow

In 2000 the BMVA names him its first Distinguished Fellow.

  8. 2021–2026

    A 2026 Distinguished Service Award

He dies in 2021, and the IAPR lists him among its 2026 Distinguished Service Award winners.
