Researcher

Thomas Eiter

Thomas Eiter is an AI researcher whose work focuses on knowledge representation and reasoning, declarative problem solving, and computational logic. He earns computer-science degrees at TU Wien, works at the University of Giessen, and becomes a TU Wien professor in 1998. His work includes a complexity paper on logic-based abduction and DLV, an answer-set programming system for nonmonotonic reasoning. His service includes an IJCAI trusteeship and chairing IJCAI-19; he becomes a EurAI Fellow, an ACM Fellow, and a full member of Austria’s Academy of Sciences. As of October 2026, he heads TU Wien’s Institute of Logic and Computation and its Knowledge-Based Systems unit.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1995

    Studying logic and abduction

At TU Wien, he earned an M.Sc. in computer science in 1989, a Ph.D. in 1991, and a habilitation in 1995. In 1995, he and Georg Gottlob published The Complexity of Logic-Based Abduction in the Journal of the ACM.

  2. 1996–1998

    Returning to Vienna

From 1996 to 1998, he served as an associate professor of computer science at the University of Giessen. He became a TU Wien professor in 1998, with research focused on knowledge representation and reasoning.

  3. 2000

    Building the DLV system

He coauthored DLV, a logic-programming system for nonmonotonic reasoning with knowledge-representation features and interfaces to relational databases. The system uses disjunctive datalog under answer-set semantics.

  4. 2006

    A EurAI fellowship

In 2006, he became a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI).

  5. 2016–2021

    Serving the IJCAI community

He served as an IJCAI trustee from 2016 to 2021 and chaired IJCAI-19.

  6. 2020

    An ACM fellowship

In 2020, ACM named him a Fellow for contributions to knowledge representation and argumentation, logic programming, and declarative problem solving.

  7. 2022

    Joining Austria’s academy

In 2022, he became a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Division of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading logic and computation

He heads TU Wien’s Institute of Logic and Computation and its Knowledge-Based Systems research unit and is a full professor there. His research includes knowledge representation and reasoning, declarative problem solving, and computational logic.
