Umapada Pal
Umapada Pal is a computer vision researcher at the Indian Statistical Institute whose work includes document analysis and handwriting recognition. He earned a PhD there in 1997, received the ICDAR Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2003, and became an IAPR Fellow in 2014. In a 2018 Pattern Recognition paper, he and his coauthors presented a cross-language method that trained with data from an available script to recognize and spot handwritten words in other low-resource Indic scripts. He chaired IAPR's Fellow Committee for 2024–2026 and coauthored a 2025 paper on self-supervised visual representation learning for writer identification. As of October 2026, he is a HAG Professor at ISI and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney.
