Researcher

Ashish Ghosh

Ashish Ghosh is a researcher in artificial intelligence whose work spans neural networks, machine learning, and image and video analysis. He moves from electronic engineering through computer science into AI, earns a 1993 PhD on image segmentation with neural networks and fuzzy sets, and completes postdoctoral research in Japan. At the Indian Statistical Institute, he joins the faculty in 1997 and helps establish its National Centre for Soft Computing Research in 2004. He coauthors a 2018 article on AI and the Internet of Things, receives the IEEE-GRSS Regional Leader Award in 2019, and becomes an IAPR Fellow in 2020. As of October 2026, he is Director of IIIT Bhubaneswar and has delivered keynotes on generative AI, language technology, and AI in education.

Timeline

  1. 1983–1997

    A doctorate in image segmentation

He starts in electronic engineering in 1983, studies computer science from 1987 to 1989, and turns to AI in a PhD awarded in 1993. His thesis studies neural networks and fuzzy sets for image segmentation. After postdoctoral research in Japan from 1995 to 1996, he joins the Indian Statistical Institute faculty in 1997.

  2. 2004

    A soft-computing centre

He joins the founding team for the National Centre for Soft Computing Research at the Indian Statistical Institute, established with Department of Science and Technology funding in 2004.

  3. 2018

AI in the Internet of Things

With Debasrita Chakraborty and Anwesha Law, he coauthors a 2018 article on artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. It explores how data science and AI can address the computing demands of connected systems and notes security and ethical concerns.

  4. 2019–2020

    IEEE and IAPR honors

He receives the IEEE-GRSS Regional Leader Award in 2019 for service to IEEE. IAPR elects him a Fellow in 2020 for contributions to neural and deep learning and to image and video analysis.

  5. As of October 2026

    Director at IIIT Bhubaneswar

He is Director of IIIT Bhubaneswar. In July 2025, he gives a keynote at KIIT on inclusive generative AI and indigenous language technologies. In August 2026, he gives a keynote at a CBSE workshop on computational thinking and AI.
