Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay

As of October 2026, Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is a professor in the Machine Intelligence Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute. The International Association for Pattern Recognition made her a fellow in 2020 for contributions to machine learning, computer vision, and bioinformatics. She completed a PhD at the institute and joined its Machine Intelligence Unit as faculty in 1999. She was the first woman to direct the institute, serving two terms from 2015 to 2025. Among her honours, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize came in 2010, the Infosys Prize in 2017, the TWAS Prize in 2018, and the Padma Shri in 2022.

  1. 1992–1999

    Degrees and a post at ISI

    She earns a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1992 and a PhD at the Indian Statistical Institute. In 1999 she joins the institute's Machine Intelligence Unit as a faculty member.

    Her Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Science arrives in 2010.
