Steve Young

Also known as Stephen Young, Stephen John Young, Steve J. Young

Steve Young is a Cambridge engineer whose HTK toolkit for hidden Markov model speech recognition reached research laboratories worldwide and the training of many commercial systems. He took a Cambridge PhD in speech processing in 1978, was elected to the Chair of Information Engineering there in 1994, and co-founded Entropic, which Microsoft acquired in 1999. His dialogue-systems spin-out VocalIQ was bought by Apple in 2015, and he worked in Apple's Siri team until 2019. The Royal Society elected him a Fellow in 2020, and he was made a CBE in 2022. He is Emeritus Professor of Information Engineering at Cambridge, a Venture Partner at Amadeus Capital Partners and chair of the AI company Recurvia.

Timeline

  1. 1973–1994

    Cambridge degrees and a chair

He earns a BA in Electrical Sciences at Cambridge in 1973 and a PhD in Speech Processing in 1978. He becomes a Fellow of Emmanuel College in 1985, holds lectureships at Manchester and Cambridge, and is elected to the Chair of Information Engineering at Cambridge in 1994.

  2. 1989

    The first version of HTK

In 1989, working in the Speech Vision and Robotics Group of Cambridge's Engineering Department, he develops the first version of the Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK). He co-develops the HTK large vocabulary speech recognition system, which features in DARPA/NIST evaluations from the early 1990s, and the toolkit becomes the basis for training many commercial speech recognition systems.

  3. 1995–2001

    Co-founding Entropic

He co-founds Entropic Ltd in 1995 and serves as its Technical Director until Microsoft acquires the company in 1999. After a short period as an Architect at Microsoft, he returns full-time to the University in January 2001.

  4. 2002–2015

    Division head and Pro-Vice-Chancellor

He heads Cambridge's Information Engineering Division from 2002 to 2009. In 2009 he becomes the University's first Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a post he holds until 2015 with responsibility for Planning and Resources.

  5. 2015

    The IEEE Flanagan Award

He receives the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award in 2015, for contributions to the theory and practice of automatic speech recognition and statistical spoken dialogue systems.

  6. 2015–2019

    VocalIQ and Apple's Siri

He co-founds and chairs VocalIQ, a Cambridge spin-out whose algorithms enable two-way dialogue between machine and human, and Apple buys the company in 2015. He works in Apple's Siri team from 2015 to 2019.

  7. 2020–2022

    Royal Society and a CBE

The Royal Society elects him a Fellow in 2020 for his statistical approach to language processing, which treats conversation as a reinforcement learning problem. In 2022 he is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to software engineering.

  8. Since 2025

    Chairing Recurvia

In 2025 he becomes chair and angel investor of Inephany, renamed Recurvia, a company whose platform optimises the training of AI models. He is also a Venture Partner in the early-stage deep tech investment team at Amadeus Capital Partners, which he joined in 2023, and Emeritus Professor of Information Engineering at Cambridge.
