Chris Taylor

Also known as C J Taylor

Chris Taylor is a computer vision researcher who uses trained statistical models to interpret images. At Manchester, he studied physics and computer image analysis, managed the Wolfson Image Analysis Unit, and became Professor of Medical Biophysics. He published Active Shape Models in 1995 and Active Appearance Models in 2001, chaired the British Pattern Recognition Association, helped form the BMVA, received an OBE and a Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship, and led the School of Computer Science. In 2024 and 2025, he introduced the University’s first institutional AI review, chaired its AI Strategy Group, and served as deputy chair of REF Main Panel B. As of October 2026, he is the University’s Associate Vice-President for Digital Strategy.

Timeline

  1. 1964–1972

    Physics and image analysis

He comes to Manchester for a physics degree in 1964, earns a BSc in physics in 1967, and completes a PhD in computer image analysis in 1972.

  2. 1977

    Managing the Wolfson unit

In 1977, he becomes manager of the Wolfson Image Analysis Unit, which aims to develop image-analysis applications for Magiscan machines.

  3. 1988–1990

    Forming the BMVA

In 1988, he becomes chair of the British Pattern Recognition Association. He helps merge it with the Alvey Vision Club to form the BMVA in 1990, then becomes its first chair.
