Stan Matwin
Stan Matwin is a computer scientist who works on machine learning, text analytics and big data, and who founded Canada's first academic research institute devoted to big data. After earning a PhD at Warsaw University in 1977, he worked at Guelph, Acadia and Ottawa, where he directed the Text Analysis and Machine Learning (TAMALE) lab. In 2013, he moved to Dalhousie University as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Visual Text Analytics and founded its Institute for Big Data Analytics, and he served as General Chair of KDD 2017 in Halifax. The European Coordinating Committee for AI named him a Fellow in 2011, and the Canadian AI Association gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. He is a professor in Dalhousie's Faculty of Computer Science.
