Nathalie Japkowicz
Nathalie Japkowicz is a computer scientist whose machine-learning work covers how learning systems are evaluated and how they handle imbalanced data. She studied at McGill, Toronto, and Rutgers, completing her Ph.D. at Rutgers in 1999. Her book Evaluating Learning Algorithms: A Classification Perspective appeared in 2011, and Cambridge University Press published Machine Learning Evaluation: Towards Reliable and Responsible AI in November 2024. A 2004 paper on support vector machines for imbalanced datasets received a Test of Time Award from the European Conference on Machine Learning in 2014. As of October 2026, she is a professor in the Computer Science Department at American University, which she chaired from July 2018 to June 2024.
