Shlomo Argamon

Also known as Shlomo Engelson Argamon, Shlomo Argamon-Engelson

Shlomo Argamon is a computer scientist and computational linguist who applies machine learning to writing style and authorship. After a Carnegie Mellon degree in applied mathematics and a Yale Ph.D. in 1994, he joined the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2002. With Moshe Koppel and others, he showed that word usage can reveal an author's age, sex, native language and personality type, and in December 2014 he told NPR about his linguistic analysis of the Sony Pictures hack. He founded the Master of Data Science program in 2013, became a Fellow of the British Computer Society in 2014, and chaired the computer science department from 2019 to 2023. Since January 2024, he is Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence at Touro University, where he is also Dean of the Graduate School of Technology and a professor of computer science.

Timeline

  1. 1988–1996

    Yale Ph.D. and Fulbright fellowship

He earns a B.Sc. in applied mathematics at Carnegie Mellon in 1988 and a Ph.D. in computer science at Yale in 1994, supervised by Drew McDermott, with a Hertz Foundation doctoral fellowship from 1991 to 1994. He then spends 1994–1996 as a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, working with Sarit Kraus.

  2. 2002

    Joining Illinois Tech

After teaching at Bar-Ilan and at the Jerusalem College of Technology, he joins the computer science faculty of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2002.

  3. 2009–2010

    Author profiling and two books

Since the late 1990s, he works mainly on computational linguistics and machine learning, and with Moshe Koppel and others he shows that statistical analysis of word usage can determine an author's age, sex, native language and personality type with high accuracy in English-language texts. In 2009, he coauthors "Automatically profiling the author of an anonymous text" in Communications of the ACM with Koppel, James W. Pennebaker and Jonathan Schler. He edits Computational Methods for Counterterrorism in 2009 and The Structure of Style in 2010.

  4. 2013

    Founding a data science program

He founds the Illinois Tech Master of Data Science program in 2013.

  5. 2014

    British Computer Society Fellow

In September 2014, the British Computer Society elects him a Fellow for his contributions to computational stylistics and machine learning. He is also the 2014 Distinguished Visitor in Forensic Linguistics at the Centre for Forensic Linguistics at Aston University in Birmingham.

  6. December 2014

Linguistic analysis of the Sony hack

In December 2014, he analyzes publicly available messages from the Sony Pictures cyber-attack, comparing their writing style with four candidate native languages: Korean, Mandarin Chinese, German and Russian. He tells NPR that his preliminary results show only weak consistency with Korean and make Russian far more likely.

  7. 2019–2023

Computer science chair at Illinois Tech

He becomes interim chair of Illinois Tech's Department of Computer Science in 2019 and is named chair in June 2020, as the new College of Computing launches. He serves as department chair until 2023.

  8. Since January 2024

Associate provost for AI at Touro

In January 2024, Touro University appoints him as the nation's first Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence, a newly created role leading university-wide policies and programs that bring AI into all of its 30-plus programs. He is also Dean of the Graduate School of Technology and a professor of computer science.
