Shiqi Yu

Shiqi Yu is a computer vision researcher who works on gait recognition, the identification of people by their walking patterns, and created the CASIA-B gait database and the OpenGait open-source project. He studied at Zhejiang University, earned a Ph.D. at the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007, worked at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology and Shenzhen University, and joined the Southern University of Science and Technology in 2019. OpenGait, a gait recognition codebase and benchmark study, was a highlight paper at CVPR 2023, and in 2021 he received the second prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award for work in remote sensing image processing. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2026. He is an associate professor at SUSTech, Vice President Education of the IEEE Biometrics Council for 2026–2027, and Chair of IAPR TC4.

Zhejiang University and a CAS doctorate

From 1998, he studies computer science and engineering at Zhejiang University's Chu Kochen Honors College and receives a B.E. in 2002. A Ph.D. in pattern recognition and intelligent systems follows in 2007 from the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

  2. 2007–2019

    Shenzhen institute and university posts

In November 2007, he joins the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as an assistant professor, and he becomes an associate professor there in January 2010. From October 2010 to August 2019, he is an associate professor in the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen University. He wins the International Contest on Pattern Recognition Techniques for Indirect Immunofluorescence Images Analysis in 2013 and 2016, and receives Shenzhen University's Best Practice Award in Teaching in 2018.

  3. 2017–2023

    Chairing biometrics conferences

Biometrics conferences give him chair roles: program chair of CCBR 2017 and IJCB 2021, and chair of CCBR 2023. From 2018, he is the main organizer of the IAPR/IEEE Winter School on Biometrics, held annually in Shenzhen.

  4. September 2019

    Associate professor at SUSTech

He joins the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) as an associate professor in September 2019. His research covers computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, and his face detection algorithm is adopted by numerous enterprises.

  5. 2021

    A Guangdong science prize

The Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award gives him its second prize in 2021 for his work in remote sensing image processing.

  6. 2023–2025

    OpenGait for gait recognition

The OpenGait paper, written with Chao Fan, Junhao Liang, Chuanfu Shen, Saihui Hou and Yongzhen Huang, appears at CVPR in 2023 as a highlight paper. It presents a flexible gait recognition codebase, a benchmark study and a baseline model named GaitBase, and the code comes from the Shiqi Yu Group. An extension paper is accepted to TPAMI in 2025.

  7. 2026

    An IAPR Fellowship

The IAPR names him a Fellow in 2026 for foundational contributions to gait recognition through the development of influential datasets and approaches, and for service to the IAPR through its Technical Committees and conferences. He created the CASIA-B gait database, which is widely used in gait recognition.

  8. As of October 2026

    Biometrics Council vice president

He is an associate professor at SUSTech and Vice President Education of the IEEE Biometrics Council for 2026–2027. He is also Chair of IAPR TC4 and a Board Member of the OpenCV Foundation. In April 2026, the Scalable AI Computing group announces that its PhD student has completed a research stay with the SUSTech research group he leads, which develops technologies to identify individuals from their walking patterns.
