Yuhui Shi

Also known as 史玉回

Yuhui Shi is a chair professor of computer science and engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. His research includes particle swarm optimization, and in 2011 he introduced brain storm optimization, inspired by the human brainstorming process. He completed a Ph.D. at Southeast University in 1992, then held research posts in Canada, Australia, South Korea, and the United States, and worked at Electronic Data Systems from 1998 to 2007. With James Kennedy and Russell Eberhart he co-authored the book Swarm Intelligence. In 2016 he was named an IEEE Fellow for contributions to particle swarm optimization algorithms.

  1. 1980–1992

    Degrees at three universities

    He earns a B.S. at Hunan University in 1984, an M.S. at Chongqing University in 1988, and a Ph.D. at Southeast University in 1992. From August 1984 to August 1986 he is an associate lecturer in electrical engineering at Jiangsu University.

  2. 1992–1998

    Lectures and postdoctoral research

    From October 1992 to April 1993 he lectures in radio engineering at Southeast University. Postdoctoral and visiting appointments follow at Concordia University in Canada, the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea, and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, where he is a research scientist from June 1997 to September 1998.

  3. 1998–2007

    Books and work at EDS

    From 1998 to 2007 he works at Electronic Data Systems in Indiana. With James Kennedy and Russell Eberhart he publishes Swarm Intelligence, and with Eberhart he co-authors Computational Intelligence: Concepts to Implementations.

  4. 2002–2003

    A swarm intelligence symposium

    He establishes the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Task Force on Swarm Intelligence in 2002 and organizes the first IEEE Symposium on Swarm Intelligence in 2003.

  5. January 2008–August 2016

    Professor at XJTLU

    From January 2008 to August 2016 he is a professor in electrical and electronic engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

  6. 2011

    Brain storm optimization

    In 2011 he introduces a brain storm optimization algorithm inspired by the human brainstorming process and tests it on two benchmark functions.

  7. 2016

    An IEEE Fellow grade

    In 2016 he is named an IEEE Fellow for contributions to particle swarm optimization algorithms.

  8. As of October 2026

    Chair professor at SUSTech

    He is chair professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen from September 2016 and deputy head of the department. He is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Swarm Intelligence Research and technical program chair of the 2027 International Conference on Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems Engineering.
