Shimon Whiteson

Also known as Shimon Azariah Whiteson, Shimon A. Whiteson

Shimon Whiteson is a reinforcement-learning researcher whose work on cooperative multi-agent learning and imitation learning runs from game benchmarks to self-driving cars. He studied English and computer science at Rice University and earned a doctorate under Peter Stone at the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. After joining Oxford as an Associate Professor in 2015, he coauthored QMIX in 2018 and the StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge in 2019. Latent Logic, the imitation-learning company he co-founded in 2017, was acquired by Waymo in 2019, and he worked at Waymo for six years. As of October 2026, he is a Research Director at Google DeepMind, where he leads a new multi-agent learning team.

Timeline

  1. 2007

    Doctorate under Peter Stone

After studying English and computer science at Rice University, he completes a doctorate in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. His advisor is Peter Stone, and his dissertation is "Adaptive Representations for Reinforcement Learning".

  2. 2014

    An ERC Starting Grant

The European Research Council awards him a Starting Grant in 2014.

  3. 2015

    Associate Professor at Oxford

After eight years as an assistant and then an associate professor at the University of Amsterdam, he joins Oxford as an Associate Professor in 2015. He works in the Department of Computer Science and is also a tutorial fellow at St Catherine's College.

  4. 2017

A Google award and Latent Logic

In 2017, Google selects his proposal "End to End Deep Model Based Reinforcement Learning" for a Google Research Award, one of 143 successful proposals. His company Latent Logic spins out of Oxford University in 2017 and develops simulations of motorist, cyclist and pedestrian behavior.

  5. 2018–2019

    QMIX and the SMAC benchmark

In 2018, he coauthors QMIX with Tabish Rashid, Mikayel Samvelyan, Christian Schroeder de Witt, Gregory Farquhar and Jakob Foerster, a value-based method that trains decentralised policies in a centralised, end-to-end fashion and is tested on StarCraft II micromanagement tasks. In 2019, he coauthors The StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge, a benchmark for cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning.

  6. 2019

    Latent Logic joins Waymo

Waymo acquires Latent Logic, a start-up that uses imitation learning to simulate human behavior on the road, in December 2019. He, his co-founder and CEO Kirsty Lloyd-Jukes join Waymo, and the team stays in Oxford. He also receives a JPMorgan Faculty Award in 2019.

  7. January 2024

    Senior staff scientist at Waymo

He joins Waymo in late 2019 as a Staff Research Scientist and rises to Senior Staff Research Scientist in January 2024. In December 2025, he is a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Waymo UK and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford.

  8. As of October 2026

    A multi-agent team at DeepMind

In May 2026, he announces that he is leaving Waymo after six years to lead a new multi-agent learning team at Google DeepMind, where he is a Research Director.
