Dariu Gavrila

Also known as Dariu M. Gavrila

Dariu Gavrila is a researcher whose pedestrian detection system reached Mercedes-Benz cars and whose later work explored how self-driving vehicles predict pedestrian behavior. He earned a computer science PhD at the University of Maryland in 1996, worked at Daimler R&D in Ulm from 1997 to 2016, and taught at the University of Amsterdam from 2004 to 2018. His 2019 work includes SafeVRU, a platform for self-driving vehicles and vulnerable road users, and a car demonstration that used pedestrian posture to judge whether someone had seen the vehicle. As of October 2026, he is a full professor and heads TU Delft's Intelligent Vehicles group.

Timeline

  1. 1996

    PhD at Maryland

He completes a computer science PhD at the University of Maryland at College Park and visits MIT Media Laboratory in 1996.

  2. 1997–2016

    A career at Daimler

From 1997 to 2016, he works at Daimler R&D in Ulm and becomes a Distinguished Scientist.

  3. 2004–2018

    Professor in Amsterdam

From 2004 to 2018, he serves part-time as a professor of Intelligent Perception Systems at the University of Amsterdam.

  4. 2007–2019

    Transportation systems awards

He receives the Dutch Science Foundation NWO I/O Award in 2007 and the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Outstanding Application Award in 2014. In 2019, the society's Outstanding Research Award recognizes his work on active vulnerable road user safety and path prediction.

  5. 2013–2014

    PreSafe pedestrian braking

In 2013–2014, his PreSafe Brake pedestrian system enters the Mercedes-Benz S-, E- and C-Class limousines, using a stereo camera to detect dangerous situations with pedestrians.

  6. 2019

    SafeVRU and road-user prediction

In 2019, he coauthors SafeVRU, a research platform for self-driving vehicles to interact with pedestrians and cyclists; its perception system predicts their paths with Dynamic Bayesian Networks. His team demonstrates a car that reads pedestrian posture to judge whether a person has seen the vehicle, then brakes or steers away if crossing seems likely.

  7. 2025–2026

    Leading Intelligent Vehicles

In 2025 and 2026, he leads TU Delft's Intelligent Vehicles group as a full professor, with research spanning autonomous mobility from perception to control.
