Rineke Verbrugge

Also known as Laurina Christina Verbrugge

Rineke Verbrugge is a logician who bridges logic and cognitive science, and she was the first to combine dynamic epistemic logic with computational cognitive modeling to study theory of mind. After a logic doctorate at the University of Amsterdam in 1993, she turned to multi-agent AI as an assistant professor at MIT and joined the University of Groningen in 1997. At Groningen she has led the Multi-Agent Systems working group since 2002, became full professor of Logic and Cognition in 2009, and wrote Teamwork in Multi-Agent Systems with Barbara Dunin-Keplicz in 2010. In 2019 she became a co-applicant on the Designing Hybrid Intelligence project, and in 2021 the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences elected her a member. She is Professor of Logic and Cognition at Groningen's Bernoulli Institute and co-founder and Director of Training and Education of the Hybrid Intelligence Centre.

Timeline

  1. 1988–1993

    A logic doctorate in Amsterdam

She earns an M.Sc. cum laude in 1988 and a PhD in logic and the foundations of mathematics at the University of Amsterdam in 1993. Dick de Jongh, Anne Troelstra and Albert Visser supervise her thesis, Efficient Meta-Mathematics.

  2. By 1997

    Assistant professor at MIT

After her PhD in 1993, she works as a postdoctoral researcher at the universities of Prague and Gothenburg, then as an assistant professor at MIT and at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. At MIT, she shifts from mathematical logic to artificial intelligence and focuses on logics for multi-agent systems.

  3. Since 1997

    Joining Groningen's AI institute

In 1997, she joins the University of Groningen's Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Engineering. From 2002, she leads its Multi-Agent Systems working group.

  4. 2008–2010

A Vici grant and a chair

NWO awards her a Vici grant in 2008 for the programme "Cognitive systems in interaction: logical and computational models of higher-order social cognition", which starts in July 2009. She becomes full professor of Logic and Cognition in May 2009 and receives the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences' Educator of the Year Award in 2009. Her inaugural lecture in May 2010 is titled "Denken over denken over denken: logica en sociale cognitie".

  5. 2010

    Teamwork in Multi-Agent Systems

In July 2010, Wiley publishes Teamwork in Multi-Agent Systems: A Formal Approach, which she writes with Barbara Dunin-Keplicz. The book presents TeamLog, a logical theory that explains teamwork through agents' attitudes and their interplay in teams of software agents, robots and humans.

  6. 2019

    Designing Hybrid Intelligence

In 2019, NWO awards a Gravitation Grant of nearly €20 million to the project Designing Hybrid Intelligence, in which she is a co-applicant from the Bernoulli Institute. Six Dutch universities set out to build intelligent systems that cooperate with humans, adapt to dynamic circumstances and explain their actions.

  7. 2021

    Joining the KNAW

In 2021, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) elects her as a member. Her research bridges logic and cognitive science, and she was the first to combine dynamic epistemic logic and computational cognitive modeling to study theory of mind. Her presidency of the Dutch Association for Logic and Philosophy of the Exact Sciences, held since 2005, ends in 2021.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor of Logic and Cognition

She is Professor of Logic and Cognition at the University of Groningen's Bernoulli Institute, a chair she has held since 2009. In December 2024, she is co-founder and Director of Training and Education of the Hybrid Intelligence Centre, which has just received approval for another five years.
