Researcher

Frank Dignum

Frank Dignum is a computer scientist who studies how social norms and human behavior shape AI agents and simulations. His career moved from Amsterdam through Swaziland, Portugal, Eindhoven and Utrecht to Umeå, where he became Wallenberg Chair in socially aware AI. His research includes agent-organization models, pandemic simulations for decision makers and a formal account of social practices. At Umeå, he leads a research group and directs TAIGA; his current work also explores AI systems that incorporate traditional knowledge.

Timeline

  1. 1961–1989

    From Amsterdam to AI

Born in Amsterdam in 1961, he earned a PhD at the Free University in Amsterdam in 1989.

  2. 1990–2000

    A career across borders

He set up the computer science department at the University of Swaziland in 1990–1991 and lectured at the Technical University of Lisbon in 1992. He spent almost eight years at Eindhoven University of Technology before joining Utrecht University in 2000.

  3. 2000–2014

    Agents, norms and organizations

He co-authored A Model of Almost Everything: Norms, Structure and Ontologies in Agent Organizations in 2004. He has been a EurAI Fellow since 2014.

  4. 2019

    A chair for social AI

In 2019, he became Wallenberg Chair in socially aware AI at Umeå University.

  5. March 2020

    Simulating pandemic choices

Through ASSOCC, he led Umeå's agent-based social simulation of the coronavirus crisis. The tool let decision makers test possible epidemic measures and explore their combined effects in a simulated world.

  6. 2022

    Formalizing social practices

In Social Practices: a Complete Formalization, he described social practices as high-level specifications of expected behavior in a social context. The paper presents them as tools for agents to reason about ordinary interactions and deliberate in complex situations.

  7. 2026

    AI for Indigenous knowledge

With Virginia Dignum, he co-authored Integrating large language models with frame-based representations for indigenous knowledge. His current work explores ways to incorporate traditional knowledge into AI systems.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading TAIGA and social AI

He is a professor in Umeå's Department of Computing Science, directs TAIGA and leads the Socially aware AI research group. The group models norms, values, practices and conventions for social simulations. His expertise includes ethical governance.
