Punam Kumar Saha

Also known as Pranav Kumar Saha, Pranav Saha

Punam Kumar Saha is a biomedical imaging researcher whose work applies digital topology and deep learning to medical-image analysis. He earned computer science and engineering degrees at Jadavpur University, studied three-dimensional digital topology at the Indian Statistical Institute, and moved from research posts at Pennsylvania to Iowa. At Iowa, his work spans image analysis, topology, virtual bone biopsy and segmentation, including a 2020 deep-learning method for reconstructing trabecular-bone scans. He became an IAPR Fellow in 2016 and an AIMBE Fellow in 2017, received a 2021 Distinguished Investigator Award, and as of October 2026 is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and radiology at Iowa.

Timeline

  1. 1987–1989

    Degrees at Jadavpur

He earns a BE in computer science and engineering at Jadavpur University in 1987, then an ME in the same field there in 1989.

  2. 1996

    A thesis on image topology

The Indian Statistical Institute awards his doctoral thesis, “On Three Dimensional Digital Topology and Its Application to Image Processing,” in 1996. Dwijesh Dutta Majumdar supervises it in the Electronics and Communication Sciences Unit; it studies three-dimensional topology for image processing, computer vision, and medical imaging.

  3. 1997–2006

    From Pennsylvania to Iowa

He joins the University of Pennsylvania as a postdoctoral fellow in 1997 and serves as a research assistant professor there from 2001 to 2006. He moves to the University of Iowa in 2006.

  4. 2016

    An IAPR fellowship

He becomes an IAPR Fellow in 2016 for contributions to digital topology and geometry and their application.

  5. 2017

    An AIMBE fellowship

He joins AIMBE’s College of Fellows in 2017 for work on morphometry, topology, shape, and scale, and algorithms for quantitative biomedical imaging.

  6. 2020

    A GAN-CIRCLE reconstruction method

In 2020, he coauthors a deep-learning method called GAN-CIRCLE to reconstruct high-resolution trabecular-bone microstructures from low-resolution CT scans.

  7. 2021

    A Distinguished Investigator Award

He receives the Distinguished Investigator Award from the U.S. Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research in 2021.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Iowa

As of October 2026, he is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and radiology at the University of Iowa and a researcher with the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging. His research includes tensor-scale image analysis, digital topology and geometry, virtual bone biopsy, image segmentation, and classification. He has served as an associate editor for international journals and on IEEE and AIMBE fellow-selection committees.
