Milan Sonka
Milan Sonka is a medical imaging researcher whose work applies AI to clinical prediction. He earned a doctorate from Czech Technical University in Prague in 1983 and joined the University of Iowa's College of Engineering in 1990. With Vaclav Hlavac and Roger Boyle, he coauthored Image Processing, Analysis and Machine Vision in 1993. He became associate dean for graduate programs and research in 2014, was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2021, and applied AI to eye-treatment response and hospital-admission prediction in work from 2024 and 2025. As of October 2026, he directs Iowa's AI Initiative and co-directs the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging.
