Researcher

Peter Mowforth

Peter Mowforth is a British AI and robotics researcher whose work connects machine vision, robot systems and AI for online trade. Royal Society funding supported his Cambridge research on visual perception; he earned a Sheffield PhD before joining Edinburgh's Department of Machine Intelligence & Perception in 1982. He co-founded Glasgow's Turing Institute in 1983, served as its research director, and helped build NASA's Space Shuttle auto-lander using ID3 machine learning. He coauthored an AI-and-robotics paper in 1987, developed the MSSM stereo-matching approach, announced the First Robot Olympics in 1990, and directed the British Machine Vision Association from 1991 to 1993. He co-founded INDEZ with Gillian Mowforth in 1996 and is its CEO; in March 2026, he spoke about agentic commerce.

Timeline

  1. 1982

    Machine learning at Edinburgh

With Royal Society funding, he studies early visual perception with Horace Barlow at Cambridge and earns a Sheffield PhD on stereo vision. In 1982, he joins the University of Edinburgh's Department of Machine Intelligence & Perception to study machine learning for robot vision.

  2. 1983

    Co-founding the Turing Institute

He co-founds the Turing Institute in Glasgow with Donald Michie and Tim Niblett in June 1983. He serves as its Director of Research.

  3. 1983

    NASA's shuttle auto-lander

At the Turing Institute, he helps build NASA's Space Shuttle auto-lander with Charlie Reece of Radian using the ID3 machine-learning algorithm in 1983.

  4. 1986–1992

    AI and robotics papers

Between 1986 and 1992, he authors at least 14 papers, including the 1987 Robotica article “AI and Robotics; Flexibility and Integration” with Ivan Bratko.

  5. 1989

    A passive 3D camera

In 1989, he designs and builds one of the first passive 3D cameras and develops Multi-Scale Signal Matching (MSSM) for stereo-image matching.

  6. 1990

    The First Robot Olympics

Mowforth announces the First International Robot Olympics for September 1990 in Glasgow, envisioning the event as a testbed for assessing robot capabilities.

  7. 1991–1993

    Director of the BMVA

From 1991 to 1993, he directs the British Machine Vision Association and edits the proceedings of its 1991 conference.

  8. As of October 2026

    CEO of INDEZ

He co-founds INDEZ with Gillian Mowforth in 1996 and serves as its chief executive as of October 2026. At Ecommerce Scotland in March 2026, he speaks on agentic commerce and how browser AI agents may handle routine purchases.
