Donald Michie
Donald Michie developed machine learning research and institutions, including experiments with learning through games and structured induction. Michie earned an Oxford doctorate in mammalian genetics in 1953 and later worked at Edinburgh. He began computer learning experiments in 1960 and developed MENACE, a tic-tac-toe machine that demonstrated learning through reinforcement. He founded Glasgow’s Turing Institute and became its research director in 1984 and chief scientist in 1986. He coedited a 1994 volume on machine learning and neural and statistical classification. He continued work on learning methods and research organization.

Timeline
-
1953–1960
From biology to learning experiments
Michie earned an Oxford doctorate in mammalian genetics in 1953 and later worked at Edinburgh. He began computer learning experiments in 1960 and developed MENACE, a tic-tac-toe machine that demonstrated learning through reinforcement.
-
1965–1967
Building machine intelligence at Edinburgh
Michie founded and directed Edinburgh’s Experimental Programming Unit in 1965. In 1967 he held a personal chair of machine intelligence and became founding chairman of the Department of Machine Intelligence and Perception.
-
1974–1984
Research leadership and expert systems
Michie directed Edinburgh’s Machine Intelligence Research Unit from 1974 to 1984. He published a 1974 book on machine intelligence and edited work on expert systems in 1979 and 1982. He also conducted research with Alen Shapiro on generating structured decision rules from examples.

1984–1994
The Turing Institute and learning methods
He founded Glasgow’s Turing Institute and became its research director in 1984 and chief scientist in 1986. He coedited a 1994 volume on machine learning and neural and statistical classification. He continued work on learning methods and research organization.
