Martin Cooke

Also known as Cooke Martin

Martin Cooke is a speech researcher whose work connects human speech perception with robust recognition in noise. In 1999, he coauthored a missing-data approach for speech recognition; later, he helped evaluate speech-intelligibility systems and models of listeners' word-level responses. ISCA named him a Fellow in 2020, and he has maintained its speech research archive since 2016. He is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the University of the Basque Country, where he continues research on second-language speech.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    Robust ASR with missing data

In 1999, he coauthors a paper that uses state-based imputation of missing time-frequency regions for robust speech recognition and speech enhancement.

  2. 2013

    The Hurricane Challenge

At Interspeech 2013, he coauthors the Hurricane Challenge, an open evaluation of algorithms designed to improve speech intelligibility.

  3. 2015

    Microscopic intelligibility models

In 2015, he coauthors a standardised framework for testing microscopic intelligibility models against listeners' lexical responses.

  4. Since 2016

    Maintaining the ISCA Archive

Since 2016, he maintains and extends the ISCA Archive, an open collection of research papers on speech communication.

  5. 2020

    An ISCA Fellowship

ISCA names him a 2020 Fellow for contributions to speech perception modelling, robust speech recognition and objective intelligibility models.

  6. As of October 2026

Research Professor in the Basque Country

He is an Ikerbasque Research Professor in the Language and Speech Lab at the University of the Basque Country, Spain; his career starts at the UK National Physical Laboratory and includes 26 years at Sheffield. In 2025, he serves on Interspeech's Technical Program Committee as Ikerbasque, Spain; in 2026, he coauthors a study on vowel reduction in conversational Spanish by L1 and L2 speakers.
