Researcher

Ezequiel Di Paolo

Ezequiel Di Paolo is a cognitive scientist with a doctorate in AI whose research spans evolutionary robotics and embodied cognition. He earned an MSc in nuclear engineering at Instituto Balseiro and worked at Sussex in evolutionary and adaptive systems. With Hanne De Jaegher, his 2007 paper introduced participatory sense-making for social cognition; later books developed accounts of sensorimotor agency and embodied language. In 2025, he co-edited an annotated edition of Francisco Varela's Principles of Biological Autonomy. He is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at EHU and a Visiting Professor at Sussex.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    A doctorate in AI

He earns an MSc in Nuclear Engineering at the Instituto Balseiro in Argentina and completes a DPhil in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sussex in 1999.

  2. 2000–2009

Reader in evolutionary and adaptive systems

From 2000 to 2009, he serves as Reader in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems at the University of Sussex, based at its Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics and Centre for Research in Cognitive Systems.

  3. 2007

    Participatory sense-making

In 2007, he and Hanne De Jaegher publish “Participatory sense-making: An enactive approach to social cognition.” They develop an account of meaning through social interaction within enactive cognitive science.

  4. 2017

    Sensorimotor Life

In 2017, he coauthors Sensorimotor Life: An Enactive Proposal with Thomas Buhrmann and Xabier E. Barandiaran. The book presents a dynamical-systems account of sensorimotor regularities, mastery, and agency.

  5. 2018

    Linguistic Bodies

With Elena Clare Cuffari and Hanne De Jaegher, he publishes Linguistic Bodies: The Continuity Between Life and Language in 2018. The book presents an embodied and social theory of language.

  6. 2025

    Varela's annotated Principles

In 2025, he and Evan Thompson edit and annotate a new MIT Press edition of Francisco Varela's Principles of Biological Autonomy.

  7. 2026

    The enactive elements of style

In 2026, he publishes “The enactive elements of style” in Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research Professor at Ikerbasque

He is a full-time Research Professor at Ikerbasque's IAS-Research Group at EHU and a Visiting Professor in the University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics. His research line includes embodied and social cognition, evolutionary robotics, and computational neuroscience.
