Long-Kai Huang
Also known as 黃隆锴
Long-Kai Huang is a machine learning researcher whose work spans transfer learning, meta-learning, continual learning and AI for protein design. They earned a B.Eng. at Sun Yat-sen University and a PhD at Nanyang Technological University under Sinno Jialin Pan, and were a senior researcher at Tencent AI Lab. The ICLR 2024 paper Meta Continual Learning Revisited, written with Yichen Wu, Renzhen Wang, Deyu Meng and Ying Wei, received an Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention. In 2025, they published Steering Protein Language Models at ICML. They are an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University.

2020
Distributed PCA at ICML
They receive a B.Eng. from Sun Yat-sen University and a PhD from Nanyang Technological University, supervised by Sinno Jialin Pan. In 2020, they and Pan publish Communication-Efficient Distributed PCA by Riemannian Optimization at ICML, an algorithm that trades local computation for global communication.

2022
The TransRate measure
In 2022, they coauthor Frustratingly Easy Transferability Estimation with Junzhou Huang, Yu Rong, Qiang Yang and Ying Wei at ICML. The paper introduces TransRate, which scores a pre-trained model's transferability to a target task from the mutual information between its features and the labels, in a single pass over the target examples.
-
2023
Neural network repair at NeurIPS
In 2023, they publish Retaining Beneficial Information from Detrimental Data for Neural Network Repair at NeurIPS with Peilin Zhao, Junzhou Huang and Sinno Pan. The method uses a retained clean set to identify harmful training data, then separates the beneficial information in that data and uses it to improve the model.

2024
An ICLR honorable mention
In 2024, their ICLR paper Meta Continual Learning Revisited, written with Yichen Wu, Renzhen Wang, Deyu Meng and Ying Wei, receives an Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention. The paper proposes Variance Reduced Meta-CL (VR-MCL), which links meta-continual learning to regularization-based methods through online Hessian approximation.

By 2025
Tencent AI Lab researcher
They work as a senior researcher at Tencent AI Lab and Tencent AI for Life Sciences Lab. In March 2025, they give a Hong Kong Baptist University computer science seminar on meta-learning and continual learning as Senior Researcher of the AI for Science Center at Tencent AI Lab.

2025
Steering protein language models
In 2025, they publish Steering Protein Language Models at ICML with Rongyi Zhu, Bing He and Jianhua Yao. The paper adapts activation steering, a technique from large language models, to direct protein language models toward sequences with targeted properties, tested on lysozyme-like sequence generation and optimization.
