Konstantinos N. Plataniotis

Also known as K N Plataniotis, K Plataniotis, K. N. PLATANIOTIS, K. N. Plataniotis, K. Plataniotis, Kostas N. Plataniotis, Kostas Plataniotis, K. N. (Kostas) Plataniotis

At the University of Toronto, Plataniotis is a professor who directs the Multimedia Laboratory and is president of the IEEE Signal Processing Society as of October 2026. His research spans image and signal processing, machine learning, adaptive learning systems, visual data analysis, multimedia, and affective computing, with work on face recognition and EEG-based affect classification. He earned a bachelor of engineering in computer engineering at the University of Patras in 1988, then master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering at Florida Tech in 1992 and 1994, and joined Ryerson University's Computer Science Department in 1997. In 2003, he coauthored a kernel discriminant analysis paper on face recognition, and in 2015 he presented an EEG method for classifying affective states. IEEE named him a Fellow in 2012, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering elected him a Fellow in 2021.

Timeline

  1. 1988–1999

    Engineering degrees and Ryerson

He earns a B.Eng. in computer engineering from the University of Patras in 1988 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Florida Tech in 1992 and 1994. From July 1997 to June 1999, he works with Ryerson University's Computer Science Department.

  2. 2003

    Kernel learning for face recognition

With Juwei Lu and Anastasios N. Venetsanopoulos, he coauthors “Face Recognition Using Kernel Direct Discriminant Analysis Algorithms,” published in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks in 2003. The kernel method addresses nonlinear face-pattern distributions and the small-sample-size problem.

  3. 2012

    IEEE Fellow

IEEE names him a Fellow in 2012 for contributions to the theory and application of statistical adaptive learning.

  4. Since 2014

    Bell Canada Endowed Chair

He holds the Bell Canada Endowed Chair in Multimedia at the University of Toronto since 2014.

  5. 2015

    EEG-based affect classification

At a 2015 plenary, he presents a method that uses multivariate empirical mode decomposition to reconstruct EEG signals for affect classification. The study tests K-nearest neighbors and linear discriminant analysis.

  6. 2021

    Canadian Academy Fellow

He is elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2021.

  7. As of October 2026

    Toronto professor and SPS president

On 1 May 2024, he becomes president of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and continues in the role in 2025. As of October 2026, he is president of the Society and a professor at the University of Toronto, where he directs the Multimedia Laboratory. His research includes image and signal processing, machine learning, adaptive learning systems, visual data analysis, multimedia, and affective computing.
