Sven J. Dickinson

Also known as Sven Dickinson

Sven Dickinson is a computer vision researcher at the University of Toronto who studies shape perception, perceptual organization and object recognition in computers and people. After a University of Maryland PhD in 1991, he taught at Rutgers University from 1995 to 2000, joined Toronto's computer science faculty in 2000, and chaired the department from 2010 to 2015. From 2017 to 2021, he was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2018. A leave from Toronto took him to Samsung from 2018 to 2024, as Vice President and inaugural Head of the Samsung AI Research Center in Toronto. Today, he is a professor at Toronto, a Vector Institute faculty affiliate and a member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors for 2025–2027.

    Degrees from Waterloo and Maryland

He earns a B.A.Sc. in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 1983, then an M.S. in 1988 and a PhD in 1991 in computer science at the University of Maryland. He designs image processing systems for Grinnell Systems in San Jose from 1983 to 1984 and optical character recognition systems for DEST in Milpitas from 1984 to 1985.

  2. 1995–2000

    Assistant professor at Rutgers

He is an assistant professor of computer science at Rutgers University from 1995 to 2000, with a joint appointment in the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science. In 1996, he receives the NSF CAREER award for his work in generic object recognition.

  3. 2000–2015

    Chairing Toronto computer science

He joins the University of Toronto's Department of Computer Science as a faculty member in 2000 and receives the Government of Ontario's Premier's Research Excellence Award in 2002 for his work in generic object recognition. He serves as Vice Chair from 2003 to 2006, Acting Chair from 2008 to 2009, and Chair from 2010 to 2015.

  4. 2009–2014

    Workshop books and CVPR 2014

The IEEE workshops on generic object recognition that he co-chairs in 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2007 lead to the 2009 volume Object Categorization: Computer and Human Vision Perspectives, and his shape perception workshops of 2008 to 2011 lead to the 2013 volume Shape Perception in Human and Computer Vision. He receives the Lifetime Research Achievement Award of the Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society in 2012 and serves as General Co-Chair of CVPR 2014.

  5. 2017–2021

    Editor-in-Chief of TPAMI

From 2017 to 2021, he is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He is also General Co-Chair of WACV 2019 and, since its inauguration in 2009, co-editor of the Morgan & Claypool Synthesis Lectures on Computer Vision.

  6. 2018

    Named an IAPR Fellow

The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2018 for contributions to shape perception, object recognition, perceptual organization, and graph-based methods in computer vision.

  7. 2018–2024

    Heading Samsung's Toronto AI center

Samsung opens its Toronto AI Centre at the MaRS Discovery District in May 2018 and appoints him to lead it. From 2018 to 2024, he takes a leave from the university as Vice President and inaugural Head of the Samsung AI Research Center in Toronto, building a team of more than 40 people whose work ranges from language-vision integration for device interaction to computer vision for smartphone camera image quality.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and IEEE governor

He is a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto and a Vector Institute faculty affiliate, studying shape perception in computer and human vision. For 2025–2027, he sits on the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors, and he is a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2025–2026.
