Jussi P.S. Parkkinen
Also known as Jussi Parkkinen, Jussi Paavo Samuli Parkkinen
Jussi Parkkinen is a computer scientist who applies pattern recognition and machine learning to spectral color imaging, and a founder of the Computational Spectral Imaging research group at the University of Eastern Finland. In 1988, he presented color analysis by learning subspaces with Erkki Oja at the International Conference on Neural Networks, and in 1989 he earned a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Kuopio and published "Characteristic spectra of Munsell colors." His career took him through professorships and leadership posts at Lappeenranta University of Technology, the University of Joensuu, where he served as vice rector for research, and Monash University Malaysia, where he headed electrical and computer systems engineering from 2011 to 2014. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2002, and IS&T gave him its Bowman Award in 2013. Now retired, he is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Eastern Finland and a docent at LUT University.
Timeline
-
1982–1989
Munsell spectra and learning subspaces
He earns an M.Sc. in medical physics in 1982 and a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1989, both at the University of Kuopio. In 1987, he and Timo Jääskeläinen publish "Color representation using statistical pattern recognition" in Applied Optics, and in July 1988 he presents "Color analysis by learning subspaces and optical processing" with Erkki Oja and Jääskeläinen at the International Conference on Neural Networks in San Diego. His paper "Characteristic spectra of Munsell colors" appears in the Journal of the Optical Society of America A in 1989.
-
1989–1999
Professor at Lappeenranta
After visiting posts at the University of Iowa in 1989–1990 and the University of Saskatchewan in 1990, he heads the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kuopio in 1991–1992. From 1992 to 1998, he is Professor of Information Processing at Lappeenranta University of Technology, where he also serves as Dean of the Department of Information Technology from 1995 to 1998, and he chairs the Finnish Pattern Recognition Society from 1995 to 1999. In May 1999, Markku Hauta-Kasari completes the Lappeenranta doctoral thesis "Computational Techniques for Spectral Image Analysis" under his supervision.
-
1999–2009
Vice rector at Joensuu
The University of Joensuu appoints him Professor of Computer Science in 1999; he heads its Department of Computer Science until 2005, serves as Dean of the Faculty of Science in 2006–2007 and is Vice Rector for research in 2007–2009. Among his doctoral students is Arto Kaarna, whose 2000 thesis covers multispectral image compression using the wavelet transform.
-
2002–2008
IAPR fellow and CIE chair
In 2002, the International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow for contributions to color and multispectral image processing and for service to IAPR. From 2004 to 2008, he chairs the CIE technical committee TC8-07 on multispectral imaging.
-
2011–2014
Engineering head at Monash Malaysia
At Monash University Malaysia, he heads the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering discipline from 2011 to 2014 and serves as Deputy Head of the School of Information Technology in 2013–2014. Tongji University in China names him a guest professor in 2011. In November 2012, he coauthors "Manifold analysis of spectral munsell colors" with Hongyu Li, Lin Chen, Junyu Niu and Lin Zhang for the ICONIP 2012 neural information processing conference in Doha.
-
2013–2016
A Raymond C. Bowman Award
IS&T gives him its Raymond C. Bowman Award in 2013, an honour for people who help others pursue careers in imaging science. From 2014, he is an adjunct professor at Monash University Malaysia. In 2016, he is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Eastern Finland, working on spectral color science, lighting research and pattern recognition.
-
2018
Professor at Toyohashi
In February 2018, Toyohashi University of Technology introduces him as a new specially appointed professor in its Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He describes his research field as machine learning in photonics applications, especially spectral color imaging and intelligent lighting, and notes about 20 years of collaboration with the university.
-
By 2024
Emeritus professor and LUT docent
By December 2020, he has retired as an emeritus professor. In June 2024, he is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Eastern Finland and a docent in information processing science at LUT University's Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory. The Computational Spectral Imaging research group at the University of Eastern Finland names him and Timo Jääskeläinen as its founders.
