Jörg Sander
Also known as Joerg Sander
Jörg Sander is a researcher in data mining whose work focuses on unsupervised machine learning, density-based clustering, and outlier detection. He earned an M.A. in philosophy of science, a computer science diploma, and a computer science Ph.D. at the University of Munich, then coauthored DBSCAN, OPTICS, Local Outlier Factor, and HDBSCAN*. The DBSCAN paper received SIGKDD's 2014 Test of Time Award, and he became interim chair of Alberta's Department of Computing Science in 2021. As of October 2026, he is a professor in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Science - Computing Science.

Timeline
-
1989–1998
Philosophy and computing degrees
At the University of Munich, he earns an M.A. in philosophy of science in 1989, a computer science diploma in 1996, and a computer science Ph.D. in 1998.
-
1996
The DBSCAN algorithm
He coauthors the 1996 KDD paper with Martin Ester, Hans-Peter Kriegel, and Xiaowei Xu. The algorithm finds clusters of arbitrary shape and is robust to noise.
-
1999
The OPTICS algorithm
In 1999, he coauthors OPTICS with Mihael Ankerst, Markus M. Breunig, and Hans-Peter Kriegel. The algorithm orders points in spatial data to reveal density-based clusters.
-
2000
Local Outlier Factor
In 2000, he coauthors Local Outlier Factor (LOF) with Markus M. Breunig, Hans-Peter Kriegel, and Raymond T. Ng. It finds anomalous data points by measuring each point's local deviation from its neighbours.
-
2013
The HDBSCAN* algorithm
In 2013, he coauthors HDBSCAN* with Ricardo J. G. Campello and David Moulavi. The method produces hierarchical clusters and can extract a flat partition of the most prominent clusters from the hierarchy.
-
2014
A Test of Time Award
The DBSCAN paper receives SIGKDD's 2014 Test of Time Award for its impact on the data mining community.
-
July 2021
Interim department chair
In July 2021, he becomes interim chair of the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on unsupervised machine learning, particularly density-based clustering, outlier detection, and spatial data mining.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Alberta
As of October 2026, he is a professor in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Science - Computing Science.
