Jiming Liu
Also known as 劉際明, Liu Jiming
Jiming Liu is a computer scientist at Hong Kong Baptist University whose research covers autonomous agents, autonomy-oriented computing, Web intelligence and AI for disease surveillance and control. He studied physics at East China Normal University, earned his MEng and PhD in electrical engineering at McGill University's Centre for Intelligent Machines, and joined HKBU in 1993. His group began its first systematic study of autonomy-oriented computing in 1996, and the 2005 book Autonomy Oriented Computing, written with Xiaolong Jin and Kwok Ching Tsui, presented the paradigm. Elected an IEEE Fellow in 2011, he won the Wu Wen Jun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award in 2017 and directed HKBU's joint laboratory with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020. As of October 2026, he is Interim Provost of HKBU and a Chair Professor in Computer Science.

Timeline
-
By 1993
McGill degrees and industry work
After a BSc in physics at East China Normal University and an MA in educational technology (intelligent tutoring systems) at Concordia University, he earns an MEng and PhD in electrical engineering at McGill University's Centre for Intelligent Machines. Before 1994, he also works in the IT industry in Canada, including at the Computer Research Institute of Montreal.
-
1993–2001
Joining HKBU and starting AOC
In late 1993, he joins Hong Kong Baptist University. His group's first systematic study of autonomy-oriented computing (AOC) starts in 1996. In 2001, he publishes Multi-Agent Robotic Systems with Jianbing Wu and Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, the book in which the notion of AOC first appears, and the First International Workshop on AOC is held in Montreal.
-
2003–2011
Head of Computer Science
From 2003 to 2011, he heads HKBU's Department of Computer Science, and in 2010 he becomes Chair Professor in Computer Science. In 2003, he gives an invited talk on Web Intelligence research challenges at IJCAI-03 in Acapulco and presents the paper Web Intelligence (WI): What Makes Wisdom Web?
-
2005–2006
The Autonomy Oriented Computing book
Springer publishes Autonomy Oriented Computing: From Problem Solving to Complex Systems Modeling in 2005, which he writes with Xiaolong Jin and Kwok Ching Tsui. The book presents AOC as a paradigm that uses autonomous entities in solving computational problems and in modeling complex systems. His work on AOC and nature-inspired computing is highlighted in Science's Editors' Choice in October 2006.
-
2011
Elected an IEEE Fellow
IEEE elects him a Fellow in 2011 for research contributions to multi-agent autonomy-oriented computing and Web intelligence. He also chairs the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics, starting in 2010.
-
2017–2018
Wu Wen Jun AI award
HKBU appoints him Associate Vice-President (Research) in May 2017. In 2017, the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence gives him the 7th Wu Wen Jun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award (Natural Science, Second-Class) for large-scale network learning and data mining methods developed with a team at Jilin University. In 2018, he receives the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award in Natural Sciences.
-
2020–2021
A disease-control lab with China CDC
In 2020, he directs HKBU's Centre for Health Informatics and its Joint Research Laboratory for Intelligent Disease Surveillance and Control, a partnership with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In May 2020, he gives an online colloquium talk on how computer science and AI can help fight infectious diseases, including malaria, swine flu and COVID-19. His survey Reinforcement Learning in Healthcare, written with Chao Yu, Shamim Nemati and Guosheng Yin, appears online in ACM Computing Surveys in November 2021.
-
As of October 2026
Interim Provost at HKBU
He is Interim Provost of Hong Kong Baptist University and a Chair Professor in Computer Science. His earlier leadership posts there include Dean of the Faculty of Science in 2021–2023 and Associate Vice-President (Research Development) in 2022–2026.
