Jianmin Wang

Jianmin Wang is a professor and dean of the School of Software at Tsinghua University whose research spans workflow machine learning, time-series foundation models and open-source industrial data systems. After studying computer science at Peking University and Tsinghua University, he joined the Tsinghua faculty in 1995, moved to the School of Software in 2001, and coauthored a 2007 machine-learning method for workflow staff assignment. In 2020, Apache IoTDB graduated as an Apache top-level project and he coauthored a VLDB paper on the system, followed by the time-series transformers Autoformer in 2021 and Anomaly Transformer in 2022. His team published the precipitation nowcasting model NowcastNet in Nature in July 2023 and the time-series models Timer in 2024 and Sundial in 2025, and he received the World Artificial Intelligence Conference Excellent Paper Award in 2024 and the International Congress of Basic Sciences Frontier Science Award in 2025. Alongside serving as executive director of the National Engineering Research Center for Big Data Software, he chairs the CAST UN Consultative Committee on Open Source and Innovation and the Open Source Technology Committee of the China Institute of Communications.

  1. 1986–1995

    Computer science at Peking and Tsinghua

    He studies in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Peking University from 1986 to 1990 and in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University from 1990 to 1995.

  2. 1995–2001

    Lecturer and associate professor

    From 1995 to 2001, he serves as lecturer and associate professor in Tsinghua University's Department of Computer Science and Technology. In 2001, he moves to Tsinghua's School of Software, where he serves as associate professor and professor.

  3. 2007

    Machine learning for workflow assignment

    In 2007, he coauthors “A Machine Learning Approach to Semi-Automating Workflow Staff Assignment” with Liu Yingbo and Sun Jiaguang for the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing.

  4. 2020

    Apache IoTDB and software dean

    In September 2020, the Apache Software Foundation announces the graduation of Apache IoTDB as an Apache top-level project, and he coauthors the 2020 VLDB paper “Apache IoTDB: time-series database for internet of things.” In October 2020, while serving as dean of Tsinghua's School of Software, he presides over the appointment ceremony for M. Tamer Ozsu as a Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor.

  5. 2021–2022

    Autoformer and Anomaly Transformer

    In 2021, he coauthors Autoformer, a decomposition architecture with an Auto-Correlation mechanism for long-term series forecasting. In 2022, he coauthors “Anomaly Transformer: Time Series Anomaly Detection with Association Discrepancy” with Jiehui Xu, Haixu Wu and Mingsheng Long at ICLR.

  6. 2023

    NowcastNet, big data center and TsFile

    In July 2023, his and Mingsheng Long's team at Tsinghua's School of Software publishes NowcastNet in Nature for precipitation nowcasting. By November 2023, he serves as dean of the School of Software and executive director of the National Engineering Research Center for Big Data Software, and presents an industrial IoT temporal big data system architecture spanning acquisition, management, processing, analysis, inference and execution. In November 2023, he joins the Apache TsFile Project Management Committee.

  7. 2024–2025

    Time-series models and science awards

    With Mingsheng Long and collaborators, he coauthors the ICML papers “Timer: Generative Pre-trained Transformers are Large Time Series Models” in 2024 and “Sundial: A Family of Highly Capable Time Series Foundation Models” in 2025. He receives the Excellent Paper Award at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in 2024 and the Frontier Science Award at the International Congress of Basic Sciences in 2025.

    Dean and open-source chairs

    In July 2025, as dean of Tsinghua University's School of Software, he speaks at the Time Series Database Tech Innovation Summit on how AI reshapes the full software stack. He is a professor and dean of Tsinghua's School of Software, chairs the CAST UN Consultative Committee on Open Source and Innovation and the Open Source Technology Committee of the China Institute of Communications, and is a founding member of the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining.
