Mingsheng Long

Also known as Ming-Sheng Long

Mingsheng Long is a Tsinghua AI researcher whose work spans transfer learning, time-series forecasting and weather prediction. He earned a B.E. in electrical engineering and a PhD in computer science at Tsinghua, then visited UC Berkeley as a computer-science researcher. He coauthored Deep Adaptation Networks, Joint Adaptation Networks, Conditional Adversarial Domain Adaptation, Autoformer, TimesNet and NowcastNet, received the 2021 FTL-IJCAI Test of Time Award, and shared a 2025 Frontiers of Science Award. As of October 2026, he is a tenured associate professor with an endowed professorship in Tsinghua's School of Software.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2014

    Tsinghua degrees

He earns a B.E. in electrical engineering at Tsinghua in 2008 and a PhD in computer science there in 2014.

  2. 2014–2015

    A Berkeley research visit

He visits UC Berkeley's Department of Computer Science as a researcher from 2014 to 2015.

  3. 2015–2018

    Adaptation networks for transfer learning

In 2015, he coauthors Learning Transferable Features with Deep Adaptation Networks, which matches mean embeddings across domain distributions in deep-network layers. In 2017, he coauthors Deep Transfer Learning with Joint Adaptation Networks, which aligns joint distributions across domain-specific layers. In 2018, he coauthors Conditional Adversarial Domain Adaptation, a framework that conditions adversarial models on classifier predictions.

  4. 2021

    A Test of Time Award

In 2021, he receives FTL-IJCAI's Test of Time Award for his 2015 paper, Learning Transferable Features with Deep Adaptation Networks.

  5. 2021

    Autoformer for long forecasting

At NeurIPS in 2021, he coauthors Autoformer, a long-term time-series forecasting model built on decomposition and an Auto-Correlation mechanism.

  6. 2023

    TimesNet and NowcastNet

At ICLR in 2023, he coauthors TimesNet, which models temporal variation after converting time series into two-dimensional tensors. In 2023, he coauthors NowcastNet, which combines physical-evolution schemes and conditional-learning methods for extreme-precipitation nowcasting.

  7. 2025

    A Frontiers of Science Award

In 2025, he shares the Frontiers of Science Award with Yuchen Zhang, Kaiyuan Chen, Lanxiang Xing, Ronghua Jin and Jianmin Wang.
