Jianping Shi

Also known as 石建萍

Jianping Shi is a computer vision researcher and an executive R&D director at SenseTime, where she heads a team that builds consumer apps with large language models and agentic AI. After computer science studies at Zhejiang University, she completed a PhD under Jiaya Jia at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2015 and joined SenseTime. PSPNet, which she coauthored, came first in the ImageNet scene parsing challenge in 2016, and PANet took first place in the COCO instance segmentation task in 2017. From 2017, she built SenseTime's autonomous driving team, and by July 2021 she was vice president of intelligent driving in its Mobile Intelligence Group. MIT Technology Review named her to its 2018 Innovators Under 35 China list, and Forbes China listed her among its 30 Under 30 in 2019.

Timeline

  1. 2007–2011

    Computer science at Zhejiang University

She studies in Zhejiang University's Department of Computer Science and Technology from 2007 as a member of Chu Kochen Honors College, working under Zhihua Zhang. Her first paper, written as an undergraduate, is accepted at CVPR, and she receives her B.Eng. in 2011.

  2. 2011–2015

A PhD with Jiaya Jia at CUHK

She joins the Chinese University of Hong Kong through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme in 2011 and earns a PhD in its Department of Computer Science and Engineering under Jiaya Jia in 2015. Her 12 PhD papers at venues such as CVPR and ICCV include studies of image blur estimation, and she receives a Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship in 2013.

  3. By 2016

Joining SenseTime and a Honda demo

She joins SenseTime, then a newly founded Chinese AI company, to apply deep learning to real-world problems. Her team works with Honda on a self-driving car that relies only on cameras, and its demonstration at Honda's annual technical event in 2016 leads to a long-term strategic relationship between SenseTime and Honda.

  4. 2016–2019

    PSPNet, PANet and COCO wins

She coauthors the Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (PSPNet) with Hengshuang Zhao, Xiaojuan Qi, Xiaogang Wang and Jiaya Jia; its pyramid pooling module gathers global context, and it comes first in the ImageNet scene parsing challenge in 2016. PANet, a path aggregation network she coauthors with Shu Liu, Lu Qi, Haifang Qin and Jiaya Jia, takes first place in the COCO 2017 instance segmentation task. Hybrid Task Cascade, written with Kai Chen, Dahua Lin and others, ranks first in the COCO 2018 object detection task.

  5. 2017–2019

    Building SenseTime's driving team

From 2017, she builds SenseTime's autonomous driving research, development and product team from scratch. In May 2019, as SenseTime's R&D director, she describes its new autonomous and assisted driving solution, which reads lane lines, pedestrians and vehicles from a single camera and runs on a self-developed FPGA platform. By 2019, she is research lead of its Intelligence Vehicle Business Unit, whose more than 50 researchers develop autonomous driving systems and ADAS products.

  6. 2018–2019

    MIT TR35 and Forbes U30

MIT Technology Review names her to its 2018 Innovators Under 35 China list in the Pioneers category for her computer vision work as SenseTime's research director. In 2019, Forbes China lists her on its 30 Under 30 list.

  7. July 2021

    Vice president of intelligent driving

In July 2021, as vice president of intelligent driving in SenseTime's Mobile Intelligence Group, she describes the company's augmented-reality autonomous buses at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. Equipped with SenseAuto Pilot solutions, the buses follow a designated route suited to shuttles between work campuses and tourist sites.

  8. As of October 2026

    Consumer AI apps at SenseTime

She is an executive R&D director at SenseTime, heading a team that builds consumer applications with large language models and agentic AI. Its products on the market include the apps 咔皮记账 and Kapi相机.
