Ilkka Niemelä
Ilkka Niemelä is a computer scientist whose AI research spans automated reasoning, constraint programming and answer-set programming. With Patrik Simons, he published a 1997 paper on Smodels and its stable-model and well-founded semantics; later work applied the system to planning and model checking. After earning engineering and technology degrees and leading a computer science laboratory, he moved into academic leadership at Aalto University. He received a EurAI Fellowship, the Knight, First Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, and a 20 Year Test of Time Paper Award. He is President of Aalto University, a role he has held since 2017; in September 2026, he described how university education can build skills for the age of AI.
