Researcher

Hua Xu

Hua Xu is a computer scientist at Tsinghua University whose AI work spans evolutionary optimization, multimodal language systems and natural human-machine interaction. He earned degrees from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Tsinghua University, then joined Tsinghua's Department of Computer Science and Technology in 2003. His team received the second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009 for a high-density plasma etching project. He coauthored a dialogue intent-discovery method in 2021, the M-SENA multimodal sentiment platform in 2022, a book on evolutionary optimization in 2024, and a 2025 method for multimodal intent reasoning with large language models. As of October 2026, he is a tenured associate professor at Tsinghua and Editor-in-Chief of Intelligent Systems with Applications.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2003

    Degrees in computing

He earns a bachelor's degree in computer science and technology from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1998, a master's degree in computer application technology at Tsinghua University in 2000, and a Ph.D. in computer application technology at Tsinghua in 2003.

  2. 2003

    Joining Tsinghua's CS department

He joins Tsinghua's Department of Computer Science and Technology in 2003.

  3. 2009

    A national science award

His team receives the second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009 for research and industrialization of a 100 nm high-density plasma etching machine.

  4. 2021

    Discovering new dialogue intents

In 2021, he coauthors Deep Aligned Clustering, a method that uses a few labeled known-intent examples to discover new intents in dialogue systems.

  5. 2022

    M-SENA for sentiment analysis

In 2022, he coauthors M-SENA, an open-source platform for multimodal sentiment analysis with modular tools for video data management, feature extraction, model training and result analysis.

  6. 2024

    Intelligent Evolutionary Optimization

With Yuan Yuan, he publishes Intelligent Evolutionary Optimization in 2024. The book presents biologically inspired algorithms for complex and combinatorial optimization, including problems with many objectives in high-dimensional spaces.

  7. 2025

    LLM reasoning for multimodal intent

In 2025, he coauthors LLM-Guided Semantic Relational Reasoning for Multimodal Intent Recognition. The method uses a large language model to extract semantic cues and model relations for multimodal intent and dialogue-act recognition.
