Hua Huang
Also known as 黄华
Hua Huang is an AI researcher whose work spans inverse imaging, computer vision, and educational AI. After earning degrees at Xi'an Jiaotong University, he taught there and became a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology. His tuning-free Plug-and-Play paper won an ICML 2020 Outstanding Paper Award, and a 2022 JMLR paper developed the method further. Later work includes an AAAI 2023 paper on unsupervised local descriptors and 2025 articles on generative 3D reconstruction and K-12 foundation models. He is professor and dean of Beijing Normal University's School of Artificial Intelligence, and since August 2026 he also leads its Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Research Institute.
Timeline
-
1992–2006
Degrees at Xi'an Jiaotong
At Xi'an Jiaotong University's School of Telecommunications, he studies radio technology and earns a bachelor's degree in 1996, then completes master's and PhD degrees in information and communication engineering in 2001 and 2006.
-
2001–2012
Teaching at Xi'an Jiaotong
He teaches in Xi'an Jiaotong University's School of Telecommunications from 2001 to 2012. The university appoints him as a doctoral adviser in 2008 and promotes him to professor in 2011.
-
2012–2020
Professor at BIT
In April 2012, he joins Beijing Institute of Technology's School of Computer Science as a professor. During his appointment through July 2020, he also serves as an associate dean of the school and deputy dean of the university's Graduate School.
-
2020
An ICML Outstanding Paper
The paper Tuning-free Plug-and-Play Proximal Algorithm for Inverse Imaging Problems wins an ICML 2020 Outstanding Paper Award. Its policy network uses mixed model-free and model-based reinforcement learning to search automatically for algorithm parameters.
-
2022
TFPnP in JMLR
He coauthors the 2022 JMLR paper TFPnP, which presents tuning-free PnP proximal algorithms that choose denoising strength, stopping time, and other optimization parameters automatically.
-
2023
Unsupervised local descriptors
With Wufan Wang and Lei Zhang, he publishes Revisiting Unsupervised Local Descriptor Learning at AAAI 2023. The paper studies clustering as a way to capture realistic patch variations and learn more accurate class decision boundaries.
-
2025
Generative and educational AI
In 2025, he coauthors a review of generative 3D reconstruction that covers GAN, diffusion, and cross-modal methods. He also coauthors the article Current Trends and Future Prospects of Large-Scale Foundation Model in K-12 Education with Qiannan Zhu, Mei Wang, and Ting Zhang.
-
Since August 2026
Dean of BNU's AI institute
He is a professor and dean of Beijing Normal University's School of Artificial Intelligence. In August 2026, he also becomes dean of the university's Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Research Institute.
