Henning Müller
Also known as Henning Mueller
Henning Müller is a medical informatics researcher in Switzerland who applies computer vision and machine learning to medical images and clinical records. Trained in medical informatics at Heidelberg, he completed a computer vision PhD at the University of Geneva in 2002 and initiated the ImageCLEF benchmark, which has run medical image tasks since 2004. His EU projects included Khresmoi, VISCERAL and ExaMode, and a 2022 npj Digital Medicine paper he coauthored trained pathology networks on labels drawn automatically from diagnostic reports. In 2022, he was named one of Switzerland's Digital Shapers for research in AI-supported personalized medicine. He is a full professor at HES-SO Valais-Wallis in Sierre, where he heads the eHealth unit, and has also been a professor at the University of Geneva's medical faculty since 2014.

Timeline
-
1998–2002
A computer vision PhD in Geneva
He studies medical informatics at the University of Heidelberg and then works at Daimler-Benz research in Portland, Oregon. From 1998 to 2002, he works on a PhD in computer vision at the University of Geneva, with a research stay at Monash University in Melbourne in 2001.
-
2002–2004
Starting ImageCLEF's medical tasks
He joins the medical informatics service at the University Hospital of Geneva in 2002. He initiates the ImageCLEF benchmark, which runs medical tasks from 2004 onward.
-
2007–2011
Professor at HES-SO Valais-Wallis
He becomes a full professor at HES-SO Valais in 2007, teaching business informatics in Sierre. In 2011, he takes charge of the school's eHealth unit.
-
2014–2016
Geneva medicine and the Martinos Center
In 2014, he also becomes a professor at the medical faculty of the University of Geneva. He spends a 2015–2016 sabbatical at the Martinos Center, part of Harvard Medical School in Boston, to focus on research.
-
By 2019
Khresmoi, VISCERAL and ExaMode
He coordinates the Khresmoi EU project and serves as scientific coordinator of the VISCERAL EU project. By 2019, he is the coordinator of the ExaMode EU project.
-
2022
Pathology AI without manual labels
In July 2022, he coauthors an npj Digital Medicine paper with Niccolò Marini, Manfredo Atzori and others that extracts concepts from diagnostic reports and uses them as weak labels to train convolutional neural networks for histopathology diagnosis. The work comes out of EXAMODE, a European project with a budget of five million that he coordinates in Sierre with Atzori.
-
2022
A Digital Shapers award
He is named one of the Digital Shapers 2022, a national award from the digitalswitzerland Foundation, Bilanz, PME and the Handelszeitung. The jury honours him in the eMedics category for research in personalized medicine supported by artificial intelligence algorithms.
-
As of October 2026
Head of the eHealth unit
Since early 2020, he is a member of the Swiss National Research Council. He is a full professor at HES-SO Valais-Wallis in Sierre and heads its eHealth unit.
